US teenager survives five-hour flight in wheel well

Mr Simon said that when the flight landed in Maui, the teenager hopped down from the wheel well and started wandering around the airport grounds.

His only possession when he landed was a comb for his hair.

He survived a lack of oxygen and freezing temperatures as the plane climbed to 12,000m (39,000ft).

Mr Simon said the boy had been unconscious for most of the journey.

Heard that on the radio this AM, Guess he passed out at around 10,000 feet as the plane climbed. but to survive temps as low as -80 with no frost bite is a bit hard to believe. Best part is he got on a plane that went to Hawaii, what are the chances

It's so funny to think that he had no idea beforehand where that plane was going. The next thing he knows he's in Hawaii.

My luck would be when that landing gear went up, there would only be room for a mouse in there.

That is amazing he lived! The cold probably saved his life, at that low oxygen atmosphere. Imagine the wind on approach when they opened the landing gear on approach, and the noise!! haha... wow. Lucky he regained consciousness on the way down, and didn't fall OUT.

Crazy.

Is it possible to go from the wheel well to, say, the baggage compartment, or some other pressurized part of the aircraft? I was watching the NBC morning show and there was an ex-pilot that suggested that this was possible. He didn't seem convinced that the kid actually rode out the flight in the wheel well. Said that someone had tried it a couple of years ago (in South Africa, I think) and fell out as soon as the landing gear was deployed. Presumably, the individual had already died during the flight.

That was the third guy in five months. The last two were found dead in the wheel well. What's the point of the TSA checkpoints? My theory is equipment in the wheel well was warmer.

The kid climbed the perimeter fence. The airport provides security out on the tarmac.
