I've always thought it would be cool to have scholarship motocross teams in college. The logistics are probably pretty crazy, but it would give riders an opportunity to earn a degree that could help them in their post racing career. Good start with the club teams, I'd like to see it catch on in NC as well.

I've definately though of how cool this would be before, but I figured there would never be enough interest at the college I go to. That's awesome that he's making it happen!

My son would be so over that. He really enjoys wrestling and judo, but I think a MX scholarship would be even better in his eyes. Plus, mom would give her blessing on that right away!

I am transferring to East Carolina in January and would love to start this similar type of program. I know of three people who race/ride that attend ECU, so maybe there could be a chance. ECU supports a snowboarding team and if you know where ECU is located you would never think a snowboarding team existed. I think there is a university in Virginia that actually had a motocross track on campus, but the track faltered due to the lack of students who rode. Hopefully other kids at different universities will follow this path and the program will grow..

What format would the races go? I have given this thought before, a MXoN style for races would work in a collegiate setting IMO. There could be a series, each one run in the MXoN format, scores over the Series give individual and team titles. Those points could instead give the top teams slots in the a collegiate championship where the same format would decide individual and team titles.

The problem is cost though, if it is mostly funded by the student, then why worry about that level when you can go to the big amateur races and try to get bigger sponsors?

Just speculating.

I think the main difference is that many top amateurs focus only on racing, while college kids have class and other things, so they sort of have to put racing on the second burner. Unfortunately it seems like it's pretty rare for racers to take the next step in education for a variety of reasons, but I think it would be cool for those that did to be able to have their own race against each other. It might be good for growing the sport as well, it would definitely reach a new audience and inform a lot of educated people about the sport, which seems like it would be good for the future.

I've always wanted to start something like this up at my school, but unfortunately I am the only one that actually rides. Which sucks because Lake Sugar Tree is about an hour from my school and there used to be an awesome practice track 15 mins down the road before the county got a hold of them.
