I heard that the finals are going to have canadian referees and that it was decided friday night, after they knew Canada was in the finals. Outrageous, they could have picked any referees except Canadian and Swedish and they pick Canadian.WTF?

Don't get the Canadians going about hockey, I've been in Canada for 4 months, and swear to god the only thing they care about is hockey.

So .... when Sweden loses .... that's the excuse you will be going with then ? "Cheating refs" with a dash of "too many injuries" ? Correct ? Just want to make sure we are all on the same page here .

No I certainly hope I do not have to come up with that as an excuse, and that it is not going to be a factor, but of all the referees? Canadians? There are US, Finns, Russian, German, Czech, you name it. There should not be Swedish or Canadian refs in that game IMO. Interesting facts are that Canada has never, in modern times won a gold medal without canadian refs in the finals. Canada won some gold medals between 1920-1952, after that they had to wait 50 years to win an olympic gold or they had to wait for a Canadian ref? 2002 when they won vs USA in the finals, Canadian refs, next time Canada won an Olympic gold was 2010, again vs the US with Canadian refs in the finals. I just think it is weird? Naturally you know that a Canadian ref will root for Canada, if you chose to become a ref, you are a huge hockey fan and being Canadian, you´d do anything for Canada to win. Nothing good can come from Canadian refs in that game, in the name of sportsmanship and fairness.

It makes sense to have Canadian refs because they all will speak the same language (Canadian) so when they hand out penalties the players will understand what the refs are saying. Aye?

Let the whining begin in a precursor to a beating. Some of the best referees in the world come from Canada for obvious reasons. Are you woolen headed enough to think that Canada picked the referees? Ha!!

Obviously corruption is rampant in the Olympics but the refs for this game (one is from the US) are some of the best in the NHL. All the players will know him very well. If anything the Canadian Ref will be very careful not to call unnecessary Penalties. Canadians aren't like that just like Swedes aren't like that, now if you were playing Russia and there was a Russian Ref you would have a lot to worry about. What you have is NHL players with NHL Refs, that is ideal. This is a better situation than if you had a non NHL Ref from another country.

JFS... dude, put down the crack pipe.
I think a ton of my Canadian counterparts are being a little overconfident with the way Canada has been playing. I think they have been underdelivering a bit.

I think the weepy swedes actually have a pretty good chance for gold this year. Especially if the refs don't let the game turn physical.

But the refs entire reputations will be riding on the quality of calling with this game. They will call it fair. It's the Canadian way. And, no matter who wins or loses, there will be belly aching. And, the best team tomorrow, on that day, will win. Don't start making shit up already. Sheesh.

X2 The Canadian refs will let them play Hockey and who ever wins will win fair and square, now if it were russian refs they are as corrupt as their government.

I did not make this shit up, it is true, Canada has not won without Canadian refs. At least they could have US refs in this game, they also work in the NHL if that would be a deciding factor for calling an olympic final, which is not obviously. I am sure Canadians would have went bananas if there were Swedish refs in the finals tomorrow or if there would have been American refs in the two Olympic finals Canada won vs USA, with Canadian refs. I am sure these guys are great refs, but there are great refs from all over the world. These refs are not used to big rinks either, so if you need refs who are used to the type of game they are playing in the Olympics, the type of icings, offsides and plays they make on a big rink, they should have used refs used to big rinks. To me it is just stupid to use refs from one of the countries playing, especially when they have used refs from all over the world through out the rest of the tourney. There is just no logic in using Canadian refs in that game, unless you are Canadian I do not understand why anyone would think it is a good idea? I would not be supporting using Swedish refs in that game either. Well, either way we will win tomorrow, so it does not matter, but when we do, I am glad that no one can say it is thanks to the refs.

I honestly think the Swedes have a great chance, and a great team, but when you say we will use it as an excuse, that's where you are wrong.

If they call a game tight with no hitting and physical play, then we will complain, no matter who is reffing. It could be Wayne Frikkin Gretzky reffing and we would complain if he called a sissy game. Let the boys bang, crash, spit and swear a bit, and we will win. Period.

I agree though.. strange they didn't mix the nationalities of the refs up a bit. It won't matter though. We will still kick those sissy Swedes around like the nancies they are. Hee hee. They won't need to flood between periods, because the swede tears will keep the ice smooth and shiny. Haha. Boom!!!! That just happened!! Wink

You mean the sissy Swedes that have ruled hockey in Canada the past decade, Like Mats Sundin (C) Toronto 1997-2008, Daniel Alfredsson (C) Ottawa (1999-2013), Marcus Näslund (C) Vancouver 2000-2008, Henrik Sedin (C) Vandouver 2010-Present. It is going to be like playing our little brothers, the guys we usually look out for, teach things, inspire and take care of. I hope our guys have inspired the Igloo builders enough for it to be a great game. Cool
2/22/2014 2:12pm
Lol! Those are all skilled, sissy players like I said. No grit.

Our igloo builders will have to put their beers down and get serious I guess. Time to whup up on the wimpy big brother. Lol

Gooooo Canada!!! Woooooo wooooooo..... eh? Smile

The Sedin sisters as they are known here are good players.Laughing The Swedes are making up more of the NHL players these days with 7% or so. The Canadian players are making up less of the NHL, but still comprise over 50% of the league. The vast majority of any records that matter in the NHL are held by Canadian players. Call me in 20 years or so and we'll see how your guys are doing. there are a few great Swede players with emphasis on the few comparatively speaking.

Amazing to win a silver, with you three top Centers out of the game, Zetterberg, Sedin and now Canada put pressure on some people to get rid of Backström, these are the same people who made sure Canadian refs were put in charge of the game. The sad part is, they would not have to do it, I think this Canadian team played very organized and disciplined. I think they would have had an awesome chance to win without pulling their tricky strings. I think Canada is more afraid of losing than they are excited to win. I do think that the refs did a good job, but I still think it is principally wrong to have bias referees in the finals. Congrats to Canada, the best and most complete team in the Olympics.

Bäckström has been using that allergy medicin for 7 years, it is legal for him to do it and for anyone else, he is not suspended, he will play for Washington on wednesday. I heard Bäckströms lawyer might take this shit to court. The iOC could have notified team Sweden 24 hours before the game, but they did not, they only did it a couple of hours before the game. Why did they suddenly, two hours before the game suspend him from the game, for using a legal medicin? Did some Canadian hockey power put pressure on IOC all of a sudden? Did they threaten to make sure NHL does not let players participate in the Olympics unless they do as they are told and put Canadian refs in charge and suspend people to the left and right? Seriously, team Canada was the best team, they would have been even with Bäckström on the other team and even if there were american and European refs. But it is fishy. you can not deny that. And again, congrats, Canada was the best team, no question about it. BTW, this might backfire, because NHL and NHLPA are talking about suing IOC, and that this really can make NHL players in the Olympics become history, because BS stories like this hurt their organization. If that happens, bring back Canada cup!

Hey JFS, pseudoephedrine might be legal (now), but he must have had a high concentration of it in his blood for him to be made ineligible.

Canada has lost gold medals over the use of it at the Pan Am games in the past (rowing), so we know all about the disappointment when one of our own fails a test for it. At least you guys got to stay in the game and didn't lose a medal over it.

Surely the use of any medication during the games must be run through a team physician for approval. I'd quit pointing fingers at the victors and ranting about some silly conspiracy and start asking who fucked up and let him take the stuff.
