I recently started playing with a Phantom 2, and yesterday I brought it to Milestone, where I filmed a little bit at the SX track.

Very cool. Impressed how steady the video is. Do the riders freak out by it? Or are you off to the side quite a bit.

When I started flying at the track I could see some riders looking at it while jumping. After they figured out what it was, they just ignored it.

However, I did maintain a very safe distance, as I can see it distracting the riders if you get close.

Its amazing how steady the video footage is. Do you have to control the plane and the camera at the same time, or is it a two man job? I saw one in person about a year ago and that one had two people at the controls

I control both the quadcopter and the gimbal.

In my case the gimbal only controls the angle of the camera, from straight ahead to straight down.

Everything else is done by moving and rotating the Phantom around.

However, I've seen more elaborate set ups that had one person controlling the quadcopter and another just focusing on the camera angles.

Does the coptor relay images back to the ground? and onto what?

You can attach a transmitter to the GoPro and use a monitor to watch the feed.

I haven't done that yet, so I still have to kind of guess what the camera is filming.

DJI also offers another product called Phantom Vision, which uses their own camera and transmits the video directly to your cell phone.

ImTheDude, the Phantom has a GPS mode that allows it to maintain its position when you let go of the controls.

The gimbal only lets you tilt the camera up and down. Any rotation has to come from the Phantom itself.

For me it's still hard to adjust the camera tilt and fly the Phantom at the same time. What I'm mostly doing is adjusting the gimball, capturing a few shots, and readjusting before I film from another angle.

I guess cheap is a relative term. Wink either way drones are really cool.

I've been an R/C car enthusiast for years. you can spend more money than God has on R/C stuff.

A local media outlet here just bought a custom made drone for filming and they paid over $9,000 for it.

you can check them out here @ Quadrocopter Looks like they sell the Phantom as well.

That's not bad. You can spend that amount on RC cars or Guns without trying. For the quality of what you were doing under 1k sounds like a steal. How hard are they to fly ?

With GPS assistance it's pretty easy. Without the GPS you need a little experience to keep it stable.

Keep in mind that after you get the Phantom with the gimbal, you still need a GoPro 3 or 3+.

Personally, I'm going to first invest in an extra battery. Next is the FPV system and monitor, to see live what the camera is recording.
