Eddie Hicks

Hi Everyone.....I'm an ex-80's So. Cal mini racer and I was wondering if anybody had any contact info for Eddie Hicks. I'm putting together some articles about old school mini stars and need some help!

Eddie was a DMC sponsored Yamaha factory rider from the early 1980's who made a big splash in 1984 at the World Mini and Ponca City, as well as dominating one off events like the Mini-Expert exhibition race at the Anaheim Supercross. Like Troy Blake, Paul Denis, and Larry Brooks before him, Eddie was the newly crowned next-big-thing by everyone in the industry, but dramatically disappeared not long after his move to the 125 class.

I think it will make for a compelling read, as will a lot of the stories of former mini stars who had the world at their feet, but somehow weren't able to put their best foot foward.

Last time I saw Eddie Hicks was early 1990's he was racing a CRC race at LACR on a KTM. After that poof gone. He heard stories he was racing a mini moto race years ago and was at the Vet nationals too. Steve Matthes took a cheap shot at him in one of his recent articles saying Eddie was a greeter at Wal-Mart in Palmdale. Damn.

Last I saw Eddie Hicks was 2oo7 He was working as an electrition. He rides every now and again when someone is willing to loan him a bike. I saw him riding in bean canyon blowing out some verts with flyin Bryan Nelson

Eddie was the next"Big Thing" in the early 80's,but was very small. He had a factory Yamaha ride in 1984 on a YZ125. Very bad year to race YZ125's-slow,slow.It was Yamaha's first year for racing production bikes against works Honda's and Kawasaki's. Not even RC could have beat O'mara and Ward on their work 125's. Having a Factory 125 Yamaha ride was nothing to shout about after 1983, not having works bikes was how Ron Lechien got out of his Yamaha contract to go to Honda in 1984.

Eddie actually didnt ride 125s full time till 1985, and like was said he never did make the transition to the larger bikes with that same impact he had in 84 when he seemed to dominate mini racing. He really struggled at ponca in 85 compared to his performances in the minis the prior year, If I remember correctly Jeff matiasevich did battle with Hicks most of the week. MR50 had stated in another thread he thought burn out and pressure may have been what killed his career.
