I have a simple Garmin Forerunner I found on Amazon for $150. I use it for biking and running (not fully waterproof). It has gps, HRM, and gives your pace and HR instantly. The cool thing about Garmin devices is you upload the info to your account for analysis. It maps out your HR, elevation, speed (and more stuff) for the duration. You can see the high and low and at what point during the run/bike that happened. Say you run 3 miles. Then next time run the exact same 3 miles. You can compare side by side the data. Pretty cool stuff.
My main benefit is pace and HR. So when I go for long runs of 8 miles or more, I know where I should be. I can see if I need to speed up or slow down based on that data. I an also look at my current HR and adjust accordingly. It's upped my triathlon training big time.
thanks for that, i've been looking for an affordable setup for mountain biking. what you described sounds exactly like what i'm looking for. ps... which Forerunner model are you running?

cheers

Perhaps this one is more in your price range?

What do you use right now? I use the app run keeper for mountain biking. It's good for gps, pace and everything but HRM. I wish I could find something similar that offers HRM and is waterproof. Seems like anything like that is pretty expensive. I almost threw down for a Polar setup but couldn't find exactly what I wanted and for that much money, I'm not going to settle. I think I wanted something that offered cadence data too.

right now i use my phone with either Strava or AllSportGPS for tracking, pace, elevation, etc... it's a pain in the ass because i use my phone for my music as well and keep it in my camelback. pausing the GPS app or doing anything else is a pain. something around my wrist would be sweet, especially if i can check HRM and GPS. i'm in Crash's same boat, don't really feel like throwing down a couple hundo, i'll just deal with the inconvenient phone setup.

Um ok? Doesn't change the fact that most of the riders on the gate wear a HRM. I Wear one while doing spin bike and have messed around with it in my riding as well. This summer I really plan on taking advantage of it.
Great for training but entirely useless in a race situation I've found as no one race is the same.

I just talked to Chad and told him a guy on Vital MX with a Bert avatar (from Ernie and Bert on sesame street) would NEVER wear HRM during a race. He then assured he would NOT being wearing one this weekend and wanted me to thank you for the insight.

Peely I use the Timex Ironman Global Trainer. It works just like a Garmin, but it is a watch instead of a handlebar mounted computer. I use it for mtb, road biking, running, hiking, etc. It comes with Training Peaks software that allows you to download your workouts. I'm sure it can be synched to Strava as well, but I haven't done it. Hefty retail price, but Amazon has them for $119:

If you are using Strava, when you stop moving it stops. Not literally, but when you get done it tracks your total time and moving time. It only shows your moving time on the phone and that is what all the data is based off of.

yeah i get that, i'm just not a big fan of Strava. the app is nowhere near as informative as AllSportGPS. only reason i like it is so i can see the times of the nut-jobs that just murder the trails i ride so i can try to improve.

I curently use the Garmin 310XT. The cool thing about Garmin as oposed to Polar is that they use the technology ANT+. So in the future you can buy cadence or wats sensor from other companies (a rotor for the road bike for example), you can conect the band to the phone or pc for indoor sesions, etc

I love all the smart azz answers.........the Gizmo photo is the best.

Seriously........there will be several riders wearing a device this year that measures forces that the rider undergoes throughout a race. It is an accelerometer of sorts. The Asterisk guys as well as several others are involved in this project. A good friend of mine has been working on this project so I am quite familiar with it. I will ask if CR22 is in fact participating.

Of course, it may well be that he simply wears an HRM.
Tom.....I'd be really interested in hearing what kinds of tests you may be speaking of. If it's OK to give out some info here....cool. Or if it's something top secret....you can trust me and send me a PM. Smile Always been interested in seeing how athletes perform under competition and training regimens. Especially in this sport.

Jeffro - It is early in the program to talk about a lot of detail. I think it will astonish a lot of people when they learn about the level of sophistication involved with this program.

It is best to let those who are doing the hard work talk about it when the time is right. At Detroit SX there will likely be additional information presented.

Not trying to be the secretive insider....just respecting those folks who are really trying to make something good here.

To clarify one point...CR22 is not involved at this point.

i have seen BT, Josh and Coop's all race with them, no idea if they actually look at them during the race, or just use the data, but it's not uncomman,

Jeffro - Go to the thread about the Reebok check light and you will find the folks I am speaking of. I think it will be quite clear which riders are participating by who you see in the picture.

The accelerometers read something like 60,000 times per second and will record 30 seconds before and 60 seconds after a major event.

The reference to Dario Franchitti doesn't tell what he sustained in a crash last year which was a shocking 280 G's.

There is so much new information coming as it regards head trauma and thankfully a dedicated group looking to mitigate the effects so we can all continue to enjoy action sports.
