I remember all those Commotion by the Ocean pics in MXA of him ripping the Starting gate apart on his KTM next to JMB. He loved those red conventional Marzocchi's…always seemed to have them on his Honda's.

Another rambling moto story here...haha
I was riding at an old SoCal spot called White sands with Dubach one day and Mike shows up. Now White sands was an old quarry with lots of cliffs and banks and on one end there was this really deep channel. It was prob 60feet across with a little hump of dirt on each side not big enough for a take off or landing and had to be at least 40 feet deep. There was pretty much no run in on the long side, definitely not long enough to shift and even shorter on the other side. Not something people looked at to jump. After looking at this gap a few times when we all stopped to bs Mike all the sudden rides over and does a couple of run ups. It looked like a very short practice start with no shift and skid up to this little hump of dirt, only on the third one he doesn't shut off and hucks this gap! He did it once more that I remember. The guy had some balls!
About a week or so later Doug Henry was there on his factory Honda and he wouldn't jump it ,and if I remember right a magazine was there taking pics of him jumping down some of the big cliffs and did a bit of an article and I think that gully was visible in one of the pics.
The hair extensions were true. Take a look at the KTM ad that year. That Mud race was Glen Helen and he crashed hard in the first corner. There were rivers running through the track. No goggles, dead last, he passed 38 riders to finish 2nd. The gap at White sands was a 60ft gap where the dozers cut the road. It was 25ft cliff on both sides. There was no jump! A bumb the size of a parking curb! He was bunny hopping off the curb at 50mph pinned on a 125. If he came up short he could have died. Ken Fought took a picture and it's in Dirt Rider on the back cover somewhere?
