I bought a 94 cr250 from a local fast guy here. All my riding buddies called him captain Kirk. He seemed to have had all kind of hook ups around the area. Kit suspension, motors, etc.. Anyway, 2 years in a row mike borrowed his bike to race the Budds creek round I was told. The bike still had the ama inspection stickers on it when I had it. It was tricked out with all kinds of extra parts, and ran stronger than any other bike I've owned cept for a modern 450. The beast, pulled wheel in every gear, and put many a skilled rider into the dirt. Would love if you guys could find some pictures of him on it to validate the story of that bike.

Healy was a bad ass. I remember in 85 or 86 he would show up to a local CRC race on his Cagiva and just flat haul ass!!! He was an idol man....tattoos, I loved the flames on one of his ankles that went up tha calve. As a kid riding 80's Mike was the shit!

Speaking of Goldenstates....Was it 86 that Ron Lechein popped Johnson in the mouth on the finish line? That was chaos in the pits...super exciting!!! I remember that, got Ricky Ryans goggles, Jeff Emigs jersey (he was on 80's) and Jeff Wards jersey from that day. The life of a kid..... good times.
It was Johnson that Punched Lechein and the cops were called,,,,,,,

My first trip to California was to Glen Helen for the Golden State opening round right after Christmas in '91 for the '92 series. My neighbor drove down from WA State for all the rounds that year and won the 250 and 500 Junior Classes. Anyway I was on an 80 but was pumped to watch all the big factory riders. What a cool series…it was so stacked. Anyway I remember Healy was just getting off KTM's and was on a Suzuki. The Pro class had qualifiers…I'm not sure if it was 125 or 250? But Mike won his qualifier and I was hanging around the starting line to watch the Pro's line up. Mike thought he got 1st gate pick for winning the qualifier….but the gates were numbered and the #1 qualifier got gate #1. He went nuts yelling at Stu Peters. I had never heard so much profanity in my life. Eff this and Eff that…Stu…this is Effin Bull Shit!! So you're telling me if I wanted gate #11 I should of finished 11th in the Effing Qualifier. He just went off. It was pretty entertaining.

I remember all those Commotion by the Ocean pics in MXA of him ripping the Starting gate apart on his KTM next to JMB. He loved those red conventional Marzocchi's…always seemed to have them on his Honda's.

I rode that Yamaha YSR 50 at Hangtown. It was Insane! Ktm 250cc stuffed into it. Me an Healey stayed up In Sac town for the week between the 2 north rounds. I had an Orange Ford van he called the Scooby Mobile. We went out nightly for our conditioning program. Here were the conditioning program rules.

1. No more then 2 drinks per night. (Very big ones mostly Jack)

2. Find girls to dance with and don't stop for 30 min (Repeat)

We brought the answering machine from the house and plugged it into the hotel room so we could screen calls and get voicemail.

Mike was a great guy! Mike was a true player! I can remember going to South Coast Plaza, A leather shop in downtown Huntington beach and Laguna Tatoo dropping about 5 grand in a few hours.
In between a couple of rounds that same year, mike comes up to us and I notice his hair is way past his shoulders and the week before it was barely to his collar. He said " yea I went and got extensions, chicks dig the long blonde hair dude" lol. After the race he was all pissed because it was a bit muddy and he ended up loosing a bunch of the extensions and was going to have to get it done again!
Another rambling moto story here...haha
I was riding at an old SoCal spot called White sands with Dubach one day and Mike shows up. Now White sands was an old quarry with lots of cliffs and banks and on one end there was this really deep channel. It was prob 60feet across with a little hump of dirt on each side not big enough for a take off or landing and had to be at least 40 feet deep. There was pretty much no run in on the long side, definitely not long enough to shift and even shorter on the other side. Not something people looked at to jump. After looking at this gap a few times when we all stopped to bs Mike all the sudden rides over and does a couple of run ups. It looked like a very short practice start with no shift and skid up to this little hump of dirt, only on the third one he doesn't shut off and hucks this gap! He did it once more that I remember. The guy had some balls!
About a week or so later Doug Henry was there on his factory Honda and he wouldn't jump it ,and if I remember right a magazine was there taking pics of him jumping down some of the big cliffs and did a bit of an article and I think that gully was visible in one of the pics.

It was 1992 and there were some fast guys at that race. That was Damon Huffmans 1st pro race and Mike and Damon went at it slamming in most of the corners. I think Damon shocked Mike a little? Mike has a way of going off. I can remember in 90 he was super fast on the 500. He would let everyone get to the first corner at carlsbad and take off from the back singing heavy metal song and still win. On a good day Mike was unbeatable. Mike was good, he was never lucky !

The hair extensions were true. Take a look at the KTM ad that year. That Mud race was Glen Helen and he crashed hard in the first corner. There were rivers running through the track. No goggles, dead last, he passed 38 riders to finish 2nd. The gap at White sands was a 60ft gap where the dozers cut the road. It was 25ft cliff on both sides. There was no jump! A bumb the size of a parking curb! He was bunny hopping off the curb at 50mph pinned on a 125. If he came up short he could have died. Ken Fought took a picture and it's in Dirt Rider on the back cover somewhere?

Well at least I know my memory isn't that bad if someone else remembers the same stuff Lol! I vividly remember that Glen Helen race, I had never raced in running water and that deep, it was insane! With you hanging with mike that much I must have met you at one time or another? Thanks for the trip down memory lane!!
