It seems there is a shortage of quality helmets available in a kid sized shell? Why is it I have to wait until my kid is big enough to wear a huge bubble head adult sized helmet until I can buy something quality?
This seems to be a "can't see the forest for the trees" topic. MX'ers are cheap but how many quit riding once their kid gets a concussion partially due to inferior equipment? I can get a high end neck brace/boots, etc. but not one high end helmet sized for kids?..................

You can get Shoei's, Arai's, and 6D's for kids. How do you not know that?

Also, if I remember correctly, some of the cheaper helmets tested better in MX style crash testing (low speed) which is what 6D is going after with their design.
Ryan, We are running the older Fly Trophys (brand new but 2012 model) which was a bit better made, imo, than the Kinetic but would prefer to buy something better. It just seems the kid market is all ultra-cheap crap............
Not to mention that 199 is one of the fastest 50cc riders in the world right now. If it's good enough for his head, I'm sure it will be okay for you kids.
However I have seen a ton of kids (as young as 5) wear the shoeis and not like they are wearing some massive thing.
Also, those kids are on SR50's so on the older end of the spectrum so some of them will be fine wearing an adult shell.
From your responses you don't have kids so please keep telling me I don't know what I am talking about. I have two boys and we don't take MX that seriously but they were jumping 50+ feet by 6 years old. A 5 year old on a PW50 can get a serious concussion. Read up a bit on concussion injuries and post back................

Many manufacturers offer a kids sized helmet but they are all in the budget line & kinda cheaply made once you look at them. The xxs are still an adult sized shell which is a band-aid, imo. That Shoei from Dennis Kirk is a lower line long discontinued. I actually bought one last year and was not impressed at all. It's on the shelf after a few rides..........
As for helmets, most have different size shells for the xs and small sizes. And if you go with a Bell or similar weight is not an issue. Most of the top end helmets weigh less than the under $100 kid helmets.
what is the issue with it? It is actually a smaller shell size. The only thing adult about it is the price.
My youngest is a great rider, but used to 'rag doll' over rough stuff and longer jumps when he was young. His head would roll and bobble. It wasnt the helmet, it was him. I pulled him off the track and discussed this many times. Some kids are not mentally or physically ready for certain stuff like longer jumps, at five or six, even if they have the skill and desire. That's where good parenting comes in.
So whether it is a beginner on a pw50...or the fasted 60cc rider in the country, both go fast enough to get a concussion and both deserve a helmet that is designed specifically for smaller heads (rather than an adult helmet modified for a smaller head).
Fractured my skull once when I was a newborn, and another time when i was 5. Besides that i had a few bad concussions from jumping off of the porch behind the house(it was my favorite game.) And here I am today a junior in a mechanical engineering program. Not trying to smart guy anyone but it does prove that Im not retarded.
Concussions, Concussions, Concussions. I hope the world gets over this dumb obsession.
