Sounds like they need to get a job like the rest of the world then. Everyone's not entitled for what they don't earn on their own.
all the working people are getting paid so somebody should pay me, my healthcare, my cellphone, my housing, my food & for my babies diapers, oh wait, I have a job, I have to buy my own stuff Dizzy Wink

Actually, here's an honest & true answer: A privateer get's his $ & help the old-fashioned way...he Earns It. Desire is nice. A dream is very "romantic"; but, it's not enough.

Results. You need...Results.

Let's take Austin Howell, for instance...4 years...of Results. Not setting the World on Fire; but, he's out there & making the races...sometimes. That's a whole lot more than just Dreaming...& just like Weston: Out of the back of a van.

This bike, pictured above, is for Austin. He's going to be on an HRT Honda, this year (2014). This bike was picked up at Mission Motorsports in Irvine via a deal between HRT & Mission Motorsports. This is a new thing for Austin. He's been buying his own bikes for 3 years...paying his own way and/or going out & getting sponsorship/help from all sorts of folks and all sorts of different companies. From Munson Pump Service in Anderson to LightSpeed Carbon-Fiber to some various sponsors from all walks of life. Getting Sponsors is part of the job, too.

Like I said....THREE YEARS (actually 4+ when I think about it!) 1 partial yr on Rockstar Suzuki post Loretta's, 1 yr Violation KTM/Suzuki City...3 yrs in a van.

You Earn it.
You get Results.

Then...you get paid.

Note: Bike on the left is a CRF-X that someone was kind enough to borrow...& then...Cartwheel down then Baja-Peninsula. UNAUTHORIZED "Borrow". That's what friends are for! Pissed me off so much that I parked it in the corner of a friends shop until I could get un-pissed-off enough to make it right (6+ Months!). The guy that was "partially" responsible got his Ford-Raptor back in nearly the same condition, though Wink
Team Green,

Thanks for the story behind the picture. I was looking at it and thinking there was something wrong with the bike on the left!
I just blamed it on the brews I hadSilly .....now I know I'm not seeing things!Woohoo Have a laugh on me!Cheerful

Peace Bro,

Can you do something about gas prices while you're at it?

Once you fix that, how about the pesky problem in Syria, and maybe you can get the Palestinians and Israelis to behave.

20 thru 40 need an increase imo. That doesn't cover very much and they pay entry fees.

I think they could double the 20-40 payout and nobody would even notice. Then give 1-20 a smaller raise. Also these guys have to get better at securing their own sponsors, think outside the box, sell yourself.

I think outdoor motocross payouts are fairer because they do not get the same ticket sales as supercross, so have less money to go around.

HOWEVER

I have said it before, and I will say it again.

Supercross is a fucki*g SHAM!

The organizers do not CARE about the talent (racers) because they see them as replaceable.

If the organizers cared they would make it a priority to increase payouts, especially to smaller teams and privateers.

The fans (us) are the ONLY people that will EVER bring change..

The top riders will not strike to bring change because:
A) It would go against their contract / sponsor obligations and
Cool It does not affect them personally

Moto industry journalists will not raise the issue because they do not want to get blacklisted from SX or Monster riders media / interviews (yes even Mathes has to suck some Monster d*ck)

And dont even get me started on dodgy shit like start gates falling first for monster riders, or tracks getting tweaked to suit Villo more then Stewart etc etc etc
C'mon, you can do better than this.

Who's making the $$$$!

I hope in this sport that all of the promoters, sponsors, OEM's, distributors, parts manufacturers, bike shops, hop-up shops, magazines and websites, mechanics and riders are all making a lot of money. But I suspect only the best in each category are making a lot of money, and some are doing OK, and the others are not making anything at all, even losing money.
10/22/2013 12:15pm
I assume running a racing series such as the AMA SX championship costs a lot of money too. It's not like one guy is pocketing $1,35M week in and week out...

Not disagreeing with OP's point though.

I agree that the outdoor motocross probably brings in less $ than supercross. I do think that the AMA should step in and insure that the purses for both are somewhat comparable.

agree that the promoters probably see racers as replaceable as the careers of these young racers is fairly short which is why older folks like you and me should speak up as our time frames are somewhat longer. we have been around awhile to see what is happening to these young guys.

I'd like to see the motocross/supercross community and either some current or former top racers step up and help facilitate some changes in payout. If you are a top 40 racer in this sport at the professional level then you have earned a higher purse than is currently getting paid out. A lot of work goes into top 40!! these guys are not slackers or losers. They HAVE EARNED IT.
The promoters should NOT be getting MOST of the money. The racers should get MOST OF THE MONEY!

thanks - cary

I agree you should say "UNION". What professional sport does not have a union??? If left up to the promoters of any sport, the players or in this case the racers, get paid very little while the promoters walk away with the $ just like they are now.

I am going to compile a list of names of motocross/supercross racers both current and former racers to write letters to. I think the change will have to come from the rank and file folks, the "commoners" or former champions/insider influence.

Like I have said before, 5% to racers and 95% to promoter is ridiculous. These guys who make the top 40 are not losers or moochers. They are racer who have earned a decent purse for the results. I think top 40 is a great result.

Imagine how many MORE American motocross/supercross racers there will be competing for a chance to be top 40 in the near future should the payout be better. This would be a reward and an investment in motocross/supercross. How many more fans would there be?? How much more $ would vendors, suppliers, manufacturers, dealers, local tracks make it the payout was more substantial??? I DARE SAY MANY MORE. The industry should be pushing for better payouts!!!

Whoever gets to keep the beer sales is probably pocketing way more than anyone else. what is it now $12 bucks for a draft?
10/22/2013 4:29pm
the simple reason why the promotor is getting more money than most the racers, is because there are thousands of racers trying to make it who will pay the sign on and try to make the show, yet few people will front the money to promote the races, and take the massive financial risks that come with it,

There have been many more racers that have made a fortune, compared to promotors,

There will always be a rider willing to ride for less. Unions simply allow more of that... The Union riders strike and the Other riders will race for the purse...

Unions are not the answer....

Look at what the Grambling football players did.

THIS is what the riders need to do if THEY believe they are being treated unfairly.... It doesn't matter what the fans believe, it matters what the riders believe and are willing to put up with....

When there are consistently less than 40 riders qualifying for an outdoor and 22 not qualifying for a SX, then you'll get someone's attention... Until then, the promotors will pay as little as possible because there is no need to pay more...

Real world example... You own a business and pay your best employee $25/hr. He shows up daily, does his job and you're happy. He can't find another employeer willing to pay more so what do you do. You'll keep paying him what you are and you won't raise his salary to $50/he because there is no need to. Where is the guy going to go? Nowhere....

EastFlorida,

Sir, I politely disagree with you.

I know of 2 local guys with great talent who may have been able to do more in motocross if they could have been paid more. I am talking about a top 20 guy in outdoor motocross. He simply could not afford to travel and keep up with cost of bikes etc. He got some help from lots of little people, but not enough.

what do you think the top 40 guy in baseball makes? football? soccer? hockey? nascar?

pay more to the RACERS to GROW more!!! It really is that SIMPLE.

Cary,

You obviously missed my point. I don't agree with it, but it is what it is. Why would a promptor pay more if he doesn't have to? That IS the point. The promotors don't have to pay more. What series in the world is doing better? None... That IS the point. UNtil they suffer, pay won't increase substantially...

You'll never get a Union out of a grass roots sport. Who would organize it? Who would lead it? Who would race when the Union riders are locked out (many would step up for the purse). The OEM's wouldn't support it...

Therefore, your friend didn't make it as a Pro because he wasn't fast enough and he couldn't keep racing because the people who pay were unwilling to support him showing up... That's the harsh reality my young friend...

The top riders talked about a union a few years ago, and when it seemed like it may not be in their won best interest they back tracked very fast,

unless the top 10 get in the union, it wont happen, there has been a couple of attempts over the years, but none has stuck,

Wrong, it won't be the top 10, it has to be ALL the other riders. The top 10 are only concerned with their Factory rides. The others have more to gain. The ONLY way it will happen is when a Nataional or SX has 10 riders on the line. THEN the promoters will get the point because the OEMs can't justify the salaries of the top 10 for a show that doesn't go....

Yet, you'll have a top 20 rider that will cross the line which starts the breakdown of the "movement"...

Mr EastFlorida,

I leave you this quote,

“History shows us that the people who end up changing the world – the great political, social, scientific, technological, artistic, even sports revolutionaries – are always nuts, until they are right, and then they are geniuses.” John Eliot

Its not about spending money on things you don't have to.

Its about investing in the future of the sport.

The best money they could ever spend to nurture the sport of supercross LONG TERM, would be to pay the bottom 30 riders / teams more.

I would agree if the "Sport" was focused on that. How much do you think the Feld or other shareholders care about that?

I bet you the owners / shareholders of Supercross do not care about that at all.

Because the owners other "shows" use disposable performers.

There is no threat to disney on ice or Monster Trucks if 30 out of its 40 performers are not making enough money to pay the mortgage.

Supercross is different.

Supercross "performers" are a living / breathing organism compared the disney on ice / Monster truck "performers".

The more you nurture supercross performers, the larger the sport will grow, and everyone will be better off.

Its been reported 8 tough blocks cost 500K for the Monster Supercross series. Tough blocks aren't cheap, then you have umpteen advertisment banners everywhere and a damn monster claw on everything down to the monster girls g-strings.. We aren't just talking about ticket profits but the $cash$ being stacked on all fronts by feld motorsports is fucking crazy! I don't wanna hear shit about operating expenses either when 8 tough blocks alone cost 500K! Until the riders hire someone to investigate all the #s associated within this complex equation the little guys will keep getting cornholed and the big dogs won't move forward with top placing purse $.

Blows my mind one of the most dangerous motorsport in the world pays the least, simply amazing. Sad Angry
