Is it a Honda or a Ducati? I had to laugh when I read that Honda patented a 'new trellis frame'

It's just a 250 v-twin, but the rumor is that they have an 800cc V4 version of the 'patented trellis frame' bike coming to compete with the new Yamaha 850 Triple.

If those are the bikes I'm thinking of, they are a TON of fun to ride. It seems relatively similar to the Buells. I rode a Buell one time and it was as comfortable as a dirt bike sitting on it but it handled as amazingly as a sport bike.

The Japs should bring the bigbore v-twins back.

Honda has sold the VTR 250 in other markets (unfortunately not ours) for years. And yes it's a rip-off of the Ducati Monster.

The very first Honda was powered by a motor that was used to charge walkie talkies during WW2.
Their 750's, that motor was off a car design from Europe, I think an NSU.
That they are knocking off an Italian mark, just business as usual.
They will take that monster, refine everything about it, put the sell on it, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Not a lot of shame in most any business, it's about profit and loss.
That Ducati can't get it right, or market what they have, that's their problem.

That's how they got the CR name, from "Combat Radio". It was originally created by "Hirokosu Radio Company" (HRC) but was changed to CR shortly thereafter.

The very first one he made, the engine hung over the front wheel, putting power to the sidewalls of the front tire.
But that didn't work too good, wore tire out real quick.

The first Honda that went to market, the Dream.

And yes, it's a 2 stroke.

This photoshop hackjob is floating around of the rumored V4. They need to bring that motor back. Nothing beats the sound...

I think for a patent to hold up in Japan they have to be quite a bit more specific than the generalized patents here in the US. I don't know if Ducati had a patent on their frame but they're the ones popularly associated with the trellis frame although Aprilia uses something similar also. Honda's probably trying to give some marketing spin to the newbies or uninformed in the market for a new bike. Surprised they didn't give it some fancy name or acronym to give it some "pop".

I watched a show back in the eighties where they interviewed the guy that came up with the technology for inking the logos on soda cans. He said in Japan his general technology patents issued here in the US wouldn't hold up and they were trying to steal his idea. He said if you had a patent protecting something like a car here, in Japan you'd have to patent all the different colors of the car or they could get around your patent based on such a on such small difference.

Because the Japanese government participates so directly with its businesses; its gonna allow businesses there to get by with just about anything if its a market it they want to dominate. They've done this with cars, electronics, flat panel displays, motorcycles and such.
