Funny, roll around the pits at any Supercross or National, and you'll find any number of riders, mechanics, and team personnel that are all about mountain bikes.
I started in moto and even raced pro, then when I went to college. I started riding MTB out of necessity as moto takes too much time/money. You can get an MTB ride in and go about your day, not so much in moto. I ride a lot of Downhill and cross country MTB. They are different animals from moto but are seriously fun as well.

Here's a video of me and my buddy Curt following in Lars Tribus into his big jump line on Sunday:

Here's a gopro from a winning race run I had last month at the blue mountain round of the gravity east series:

I think most people here would enjoy Downhill, its much closer to the way 90s moto used to be, grass roots out of pick up trucks and what not. People are easy going and cool. Its not a blue blood sport (yet), although the bikes are really expensive, some bikes are even more expensive than moto bikes and have no engine. The day/day cost of MTB is lower, usually. Its sort of nuts how economies of scale impact price of bikes though. Carbon DH/Trail bikes are like 9k retail!

Anyways, I think its funny that the pro moto guys wear spandex too, haha.

Riding at Lars Tribus house on Sunday, the video gives these jumps no justice they are pretty huge with massive consequence:

Whistler 2012 vids, this was a trip where I met up with the Fly Racing guys, like Doug Rippinin. We have like 50 gigs of footage from this years trip which I haven't editted yet, but enjoy.

In my opinion, there is a pretty big divide between your average XC weight weenie and the gravity guys, its almost a completely different breed, very little cross over. Gravity trail riding is an emerging middle ground. Enduro races and SuperD are a nice cross over between. XC tends to go towards road and suffering more than getting rad. I don't race XC because I am not a sadist.

Dude, you buddies with Lars? He is the man (and a funny dude). I used to ride with him when I was racing dh and on the eastcoast. I think I was the first one or one of the first ones to hit those big hits at his house several years ago and I was on my dirtjump hardtail (or maybe my slalom bike I forget). Tongue haha

Tell him Seth said whats up!

While I was racing heavily years ago I lived in a duplex and rented one side out to an aspiring pro MTB guy. It was perfect because it helped push me just by him driving to all the trails around the state during the week for years and that helped so much in training for moto. I raced mx every weekend and rode mtb all week. I had a Wal-Mart mongoose $149.99 because I did not want it to be easy because it was training for moto. After everything broke right away it ended up having all xtr parts and about everything replaced. I always got tested by the mtb racers or park workers for my times because I was winning a lot of moto and my friends would talk me up. I supposedly blew the doors off a few pro times an quite a few trails and some refused to believe it but motocross is just so much more physical than all other sports and it makes everything else cake. I won a Florida series championship and Bells bikes gave me a Cannondale Gemini 1000 for 1/3 the price and it is like a dirtbike with no motor. Perfect for Florida....not. Moto makes machines out of humans, I used to surf "dark to dark" and never have not made it out, ever. All my non moto friends believe moto has to be the best work out ever because I can outlast most at everything we do and my friends are just amazed at my fitness during regular fun but then they see me ride 5 laps of moto and be fully spent and they are believers because I just don't get tired at all the other sports. I can't tell if they say "but your a 1%er" because of my fitness or that I take all the casino's money 9 out of ten times. Either way moto is the best work out possible. Ha

Oh yea and those trail times, the funny part is I never even saw a few of them before I was timed on them. I just stood up mashing pedals with horrible technique I am sure but just going wide open. I had a park ranger make me do one twice because he did not believe it, I may of missed my calling. On that note I have been a lazy bastard for a year, no riding, exercise and just fishing, sodas and sleep. I am surprised I have not gotten fat.

I know it's different fashion for different disciplines, and I don't think I really questioned your devotion or knowledge.

If you were doing Mammoth with V-brakes, you were probably a few years after me. Wink

Way back in the day I was the editor on Mountain Biking magazine, worked at Specialized for a while (think Overend/Palmer era).
It’s all good!

I was simply making a statement about Lycra not being cool and that’s for road and XC. My thought is that unless you are on the Tour De France or doing and Iron Man does it really help you that much to justify the Miley Cyrus look.

You were kind of insinuating that I didn’t know anything about competitive cycling with your comment about the trails so I felt the urge to justify my statement with my list of current equipment even though my stumpjumper is from 1983, I love my Enduro Comp and the Demo is just friggen amazing!!!!

Since we are name dropping I have ridden with Cameron Zinc and recently Greg Menaar while he was testing the new FOX 40 Air Forks a few weeks back. He must have worn out an entire set of brake pads riding behind my slow ass... but he is super cool and did 3 runs with me and made my week!!!
