You might check with your local dealer and get a crate from him or pieces of several crates to make 1. The trucking companies want to be able to use a fork lift to move it around the loading docks and in and out of trucks so it doesn't have to be real fancy.

But if you need another option try Forward Air. Check if there is a Forward distribution center close to the city you will ship and receive from. If not forget it. Forward Air has containers specific for motorcycles that cost around $300 dollars. Just wheel the bike into the container, use tie downs to constrain it then lock the container with a combination lock and email the combination to the person picking up the bike.

One year ago I shipped a CR 250 via Forward Air from California to Illinois and it cost me around $150 using a wood crate. The price was reasonable but what a hassle. I had to make my own crate which cost about $75.00 in wood, then disassembly the front wheel and handlebars, tie the bike down in the crate with tie downs, then lift the crated bike into my truck, then finally drive to the Forward Air distribution and deal with their staff. The first time you do this is a hassle but it gets easier with more experience. I go this route because I have the capabilities and its cheaper but this only works if your shipping the bike or the seller agrees to make a crate and deliver to Forward Air.

I know that OnthePipe has disassembled bikes and boxed the pieces up and shipped them USPS. I may try this in the future but using United Parcel Service instead of USPS because USPS Post Offices in California are a joke when it comes to waiting and customer service. Imagine one of those USPS clerks lifting a boxed up 500cc engine through the clerk window .

I'm working on getting a bike shipped from Ca to Ohio and am using uship.com.
The best bid I have so far is $400 bucks which isn't bad at all. I have used forwardair.com before but they were just under $600 and the seller didn't want
to crate the bike. Uship.com is the way to go from what I have learned so far.
