Never rode one couldnt tell ya.
Ripped it up on Snowmobiles but it was all whoopdee do's and groomed flat track sweeper stuff.
The GNCC quad stuff looks Brutal though, I wouldnt want to do it.

Since I rode them for about 10 years, I guess I'll bite.

I actually think that quads are more physical to ride than dirtbikes, at least they're harder to ride on rough terrain. Plus, the faster you go, the more they beat you to death. The slower you go, and the smoother the terrain, the better the quad does (with a distinct advantage on slippery ground over 2 wheels). Riding a quad at speed requires much more body english.

They weigh 100+ pounds more than a dirtbike (talking performance quads here, not some 4x4 with a gun rack and a case of Buttwiper beer strapped to the back), the suspension isn't as well developed, and there's another "plane" for the machine to rip the bars out of your hands. Going into a set of braking bumps will have the quad bucking not just up and down, but one side of the bars will be going up while the other is going down.

Even in the quad's natural enviroment, sand, a dirtbike rides much smoother.

A top level MX quad rider is every bit the athlete that a top level MX bike rider is. The real issue that most guys rightly have with quads is the very poor ratio of responsible quad riders to absolute idiots. Unfortunately, there are too many quad riders that need a bit of chlorine in the gene pool.

not to mention.......some of those pro quad riders.....can ride the wheels off of them. I'm sure they'd be the majority of the people on this board...if not all but a few.

Say what you want about quads. I hear the fast guys were turning around 2:00 min. at LL last week. And a few went under that mark.

I actually started racing on a qyad, and i def. will not go back. Just like Fisher said, they are rougher than dirt bikes. I raced three or four seasons on them and got on a bike when i was 15. At 13 or 14 years old, my back would kill after the weekend was done. They are def. a more demanding ride, but I think you need more technique to ride a bike.
But yes, the top quad guys are rediculously, fast.

No way I would race a quad. I'm sure that on the same rough as hell moto track, the quad would kick my ass more than a bike... I've been bucked off one at Gorman (on the trails) when it started swapping and there was no way to stop it... NO WAY!

With that said, what I have seen at ATV Nationals, the tracks aren't that gnarly but they blow me away with the stuff they jump...

Not my thing really, but I wouldn't turn down a day of riding someone else's quad.

Couch riding versus dirt bike. I do not even know where to begin I rode quads for a while (actually started off on them) and switched to bikes. I have ridden GNCC's for years and seen many quad races on saturday before the bikes and can say without a doubt that quad racing requires less fitness. BODY english...hmmm. let's see riding a bike requires constant imput because tadah the bike would fall over without it. Secondly turning on a bike requires all kinds of rider imput, most quad riders sit down almost all of the time. Yes it looks rough on a quad but the speeds are slower and there is more time to rest when going through mud, or going up hills because the quad is designed for the rider to be sitting most of the time whereas a bike is ergonomically designed for a mixture of both, but an emphasis on standing up.

I agree with the ration of idiots to non morons, but I have been around quads and bikes and can say first hand at the top off road level quad rider fitness really is not there. Bill Balance is really not a trainer, Barry Hawk had to up his training massively to be competative in the bike devision after 7 or 8 quad titles. I will say this though some of the top quad racers do have serious skills that are often overlooked. Some of their abilities are often overlooked.

I used to practice at a track of a former pro quad racer (he did better at flattrack than moto, but still he was top ten ranked) and my friend who was an A moving to pro motocross rider on bikes jumped on one of this guys back up quads and was every bit as fast as this guy without doing any jumps. It does not bring me any pleasure to say that quads are slower, but they are.
