I think the 2012 and 2013 kx 450s are pretty darn good, they get a lot of good reviews, especially for power.

Either of those bikes would make a good desert racer. Both bikes had a reputation for not wanting to turn very well on tighter moto tracks, but were very stable feeling at higher speeds, perfect for desert. As far as reliability goes, I'd trust a used Yamaha over any other brand any day. (not trying to diss the above bike, sounds mint) As far as power goes, Kawis have always been powerhouses. Kawis 09 and up are fuel injected, and the '12 and '13 models are much thinner and nimbler feeling than the older models, which had a thick/wide feel to them. 06-09 Yamahas are carbureted and are mostly similar (some frame tweaking done in 08 I believe) and from '10 up you get fuel injection with the backwards motor design. VERY wide around the radiator shrouds. Hope this helps

I'd vote 08 Honda if your looking for the best value if your going used. The Yamaha and Honda bikes are a safer bet used.

If your looking for the most "bang" for your buck I'd recommend a 2012 KX http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYXeEIyp1fc
