Pm me if you want to make that 144 a monster, the guy who did mine is in montana. He'll cut the head, modify the powervalve and clean up the porting to get the most out of it. Mine is high comp race gas only and it turned out better than I'd hoped for.
pmed you

Wow, killer looking bikes, and props to vitards for helping out other vitards!

I've heard that Aprilla has an interesting sound, but I guess you're one of those guys that never takes the action figure out of the box.

Hey man, hows it going?
I've been admiring your rides for a while now, notably your Husky.

I've lined up a good looking 2010 cr144 with just 30hrs on the clock. All i have to do is sell my 12rmz250 and it's a done deal. Anyways i have a few questions about owning the bike if its not too much trouble?
Hows your experience with it to date, still loving it?
Was the stock carb really that hard to jet and deal with? And is this why so many people are switching to these "smart" metering rod carbs? I've been around motors for a while now and never heard of them and was wondering why the big fuss all of a sudden?
As for engine tuning i see you've explored almost all avenues. 125. 144. 144 modified. 165 (modified?). Pipes. etc. Was just wondering what your take is on these configurations; pros v cons with each. I race mx2 out here in NZ and can legally race up to a 250 2st in this class, so displacement isn't really an issue, having fun on a proper motox bike is!

Finally, any other tips or tricks to owning one you could share?

Sorry for the long post and lots of questions but your rides do look sweet, you have gone through the mill with configurations and you ride mx. Most other information sources are all geared up for enduro stuff so you opinion (and others) is very welcome.

Cheers

Nice bikes to look at, but the HVA is the only one worth riding it. And yes, i rode them all. But it's an awesome collection to have in his garage, that's for sure.

Thanks for the kind words.

I still like the bike, haven't had a chance to ride it in 165 trim yet other than to break it in around the yard.

The stock carb is difficult to keep it jetted crisp, fortunately it's the easiest bike in the world to perform carb adjustments on. Tons of room and access. Pepole are switching to the smart carbs because they just work better than any Keihin or Mikuni is capable of, and once you make a couple of minor tweaks they shouldn't need any more fuss. More power, better throttle response, cleaner burn, less soot, better fuel mileage and as close to perfect carburetion as we're likely to ever see until direct injection is here.

As a 125 it wasn't enough for my heavy ass, very hard to keep it on the pipe even with tremendous clutch abuse. The modded 144 was the answer, it was perfect. Tons of power with plenty of mid to keep from falling off the pipe. I only went to the 165 kit because I can.. I'm not sold on if it will be better for moto or not. The woods guys sure love it and swear up and down that I will too.. So I went with high compression for more punch and a pipe that will really let it rev. I'll get a chance to give it a shake down this weekend. If it works better than the 144 I'll be impressed, because I thought the 144 was about as good as it gets.

The only concern I have is excessive frame flex. If you jump big the headstays break on these bikes and the new ones are substancially beefed up around the footpegs with a redesigned headstay to help fix this issue. A lot of people were able to get replacement frames, I'm going to try to press for one too. If not I'm going to be watching for cracks, and after this riding season I'll either be getting rid of the bike, or stripping it down and doing some welding/gusseting for more strength.

I haven't ridden the bike in stock 144 form, but mine was super fast with a semi-high comp head, modded powervalves and some light cylinder work with Scalvini pipe.

Handling is like it's on rails, best I've ever ridden bar none.

The bike is built well, besides the excessive frame flex, and I broke one kickstarter. The wheels have stayed true and haven't had any other issues.

Some people never have problems with the headstays and some do. I don't know if it depends more on the rider, or if it was a certain batch of frames. Keep that in mind and make sure you're getting the bike at a bargain price, the resale sucks on these bikes and even brand new they regularly get liquidated at rediculously low prices on this side of the pond. Right now you can get a brand new 2013 for about $4k which is a steal. Sucks for us owners because now our low hour used bikes are only worth $2500.

If that 144 had just a LITTLE BIT more balls, I'd go get one. Too bad they don't do a 250CR. Those things look great all done up.

I rode one of those Aprilias on a long driveway. Deceptive. They are quiet and smooth, so you don't realize you are going Mach Jesus.

I tried to turn the WR300 into a CR but it's just an old world feeling bike. The 144 felt like it was just as fast, just had to be ridden a little differently. The 300 felt big, awkward, heavy, revved way too slow slow and it vibrated like hell compared to its little brother. Maybe if I'd done some engine work to wake it up it might have felt like a whole different bike, I focused on fixing the chassis instead. I didn't find it fun at all to ride but some guys love them. Maybe I would have liked it better as a 250. Hell, if the 144 wasn't outperforming it in every aspect maybe I would have liked it more.

Take them off the track and into the trees and the WR300 felt like a bulldozer, it would chug through the gnarliest stuff all you had to do was point it and hold on. Total cheater bike. It would idle through stuff without stalling like it was a diesel.

arr right a bit of a mixed response then. Not too sure if i like the sound of snapping frames, epically at the headstock. With the failures what sort of numbers or percentages are we talking about? I guess it being steel its more likely to crack first before catastrophic failure? Or am i wrong?

I've found what i think to be a clean one + I really like the 10/11 models...white frames & black wheel sets but if i have to break her down, get some welding done + re-coat then i could be half way to getting a new one...repaint the frame when it looks a little tired and get that spare wheel set I've always told myself I need. Hmmm

The bike in question. What do you think? Bare in mind that these are NZ dollars and a new one goes for 10k:

Will be eagerly waiting to hear your comments on the 165....have you also got the Lectron carb on it at the mo?

Thanks for all the info, this is magic!

All else fails then a clean yz250 with a doubled up base gasket and a flywheel weight could be on the cards! hehehe

arr right...how bad is the frame issue, its kinda the first i've heard of it? What sort of numbers of failures re we talking? Actually is the excessive frame flex to blame for the cracking of those engine mounts that I've read about?

Correct me if i'm wrong but with steel haven't you got a greater chance of cracking the bleeder before a catastrophic failure might occure? You'd surely pick up on a crack through maintenance & pre/post moto checks?

Eagerly awaiting on your 165 review...have you got the Lectron on her too?

Also having only recently landed in NZ i know of no reputable engine tuners or any husky specialist. Who might i ship my bits to for massaging & machining like yours? I can get a hold of a scored 125 top end for a couple of hundred and was either going to get it massaged and or 165 out.

Also this is the bike in question. What do you make of it (bearing in mind these are NZ dollars and new they go for k10)?
