Bike for little girl

Edited Date/Time 2/18/2013 10:32am
A friend is looking for advice on what bike to get for her little girl, and I haven't researched on little beginner bikes much. The girl is petite, turning 5 this week, can ride a bicycle, is pretty fearless, but has never ridden a dirt bike or quad before. I think she should get something that she can learn on, but still be able to ride for a while. She is looking for something used, as she doesn't have a large budget for this. Her husband is mechanically inclined, but they also don't want to have to spend a lot of time or money working on or fixing the bike. I think for now, it will mostly be ridden in their yard (in town). Any advice on what to consider (or avoid), and maybe even why, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yamaha pw 50s are pretty popular. Or a Honda 50. Don't let them get a Chinese bike. If they buy an okay Yam or Honda and take care of it, they can sell it again for not much less than they paid.

Thanks for the reply. That's kind of what I was thinking, but just wanted to confirm with someone familiar with it all.

My little girl sure likes her crf50! She started riding at 6 though, and she is tall for her age. If she were younger or smaller I would have probably gone with a Yamaha pw 50. She is 7 now and handles the Honda with no problem.

My daughter at about that same age had a hard time with the CRF 50 because of the weight. The PW 50 would be lighter. She's probably already too big for the JR 50. Another option is the KTM Mini Adventure 50. It is very light, full auto transmission, and oil induction. My daughter really liked hers.

A Yamaha TT-r 50 is about the same size and weight as a CRF50, but it has electric start.

+1 on the crf50.But if money is tight the SSR 70 is 399 u.s. and most every Crf part fits it.I know the Chinese bikes are sub par but I see adults local and on YouTube beating the tar out of em with no issues. Its a semi auto with no clutch and can idle in second gear.
