I would love to get a hold of the media kits from the teams and see what and how they sell the team sponsorship.

Their some some serious issues with exposure with our sport and it's going to be ugly over the next few years unless we can get it sorted out.

I think you should calm down.... I have clinical adhd and sometimes type faster than I should...

For the record, my comment was not directed to the JDR team but the industry as a whole. It's no secret that many teams struggle securing sponsorship, the industry cannot survive off itself. The coverage that the sponsors get from TV and print and online media doesn't cut it. Their has to be something more.

Last night I broke it down and pictured how I would sell a potential sponsor, how many impressions a year they would get a season via tv, online, print...etc and then add in the visibility of the rig on the road and how many miles it drives (essentially a moving billboard). The special appearances the interviews etc.... aka all the standard stuff.

Then I started thinking about all the things that should be done differently to attract the big sponsors, and I'm not talking about a party in the pits. It didn't take me long to come up with 3-4 solid ideas that could work. However their is no way to know for sure that my ideas are not already included in the marketing plans of the teams without seeing the media kits.

I work in advertising and sponsorship sales in the powersports industry and have access to systems that allow you to search databases for contacts that actively sponsor teams and events. Setting up meetings would be a cake walk, I don't understand why the industry isn't already on top of this. Again, I could be wrong, this approach could already of been used and all the companies been contacted. The question is what was said in these meeting and how was it presented.

Which brings me back to my original post.

I could write a whole novel on this shit but Ihave to get back to selling.. its a full time gig

What a well written announcement. You really have to appreciate the respectable advance notice in light of some of the other similar situations that have occurred during these tough economic times. At least now their racers and other people who hold positions have some time to make other arrangements for employment before the end of the SX season. Sorry to see a solid race effort go. The sport needs these privateer teams. If outside sponsors are getting into the sport, we need to support them and buy their product, and if possible through means where they can track that product coming from motorcycle channels and enthusiasts.

I noticed TLD just picked up MotoBrew. That is an easy one....grab some cold MotoBrews to show them it was a good investment.
I just ordered a few 22oz bottles myself! Smile

Perhaps a switch back to bikes that have no ultra expensive motor/valve mods, maybe one that runs pre mix.

How about just a simple box van(diesel if possible) with a mechanic driving and living out of it round to round, after a race or 2 he can put a new clutch and top end in the bike.

He can pick up his rider at the airport and they can share a hotel room close to the track.

.......oh wait, that's how they once did things, and it worked just fine.

Phil Mickleson is going to leave San Diego because he doesn't want to pay 62% of his income to the government.....penalizing success is such bullshit

You will have to excuse me P.....sometimes I post on here when I am half asleep and do not make myself clear.

Many teams/sponsors are in this sport because it is their passion/hobby. They are not in it because it will pad their bank accounts.

When the taxes start to affect the rich it will trickle down to the ones below. Jstar, who sells high end cars is a sponsor of JDR racing. When the rich slow their spending it affects Jstars sales and that in turn will affect how they spend. With the new tax laws you can be assured Jstar motors is going to feel it in the coming year.

Look at that....I still have a hard time making sense when I am awake. My fault for reading MXA during English class

Aren't automobile sales up? Honestly, I doubt that they pulled out because of new taxes. If they are then their taxiable income will end up going up simply from not fielding a team. Maybe they didn't feel that they were getting a return on their money? They didn't put it out there enough what Jstar did or was as a sponsor. That's just MNO.

Despite it's regional status in Supercross, the 250 class isn't a feeder class. It's a pro class on its own. Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

Maybe the 250 class needs to be a stock class. OEM unmodified internals, stock suspension internals with the exception of valving. Exhaust only. No Ti parts, spec tires, etc. If the manufacturers build a crap model, too bad, do better next time. Yeah it would knock a few aftermarket companies out of being able to buy in cheap but when there is nothing but the factory supported efforts they won't be able to anyway. Make the 450 an open 250/350/450 whatever, no limits class. The aftermarket mods companies can focus on working with the non factory efforts. A non factory supported team with the right people can build a bike just as good as a works bike with the right resources.

Is Jstar in Australia? I thought it was right up the 5 from me being fed by the Orange County upper class that the tax plan affects the most. I am talking about a sponsor of JDR, which to me is the reason they are folding ......lack of sponsorship dollars.

BTW auto sales were up before the new tax laws came in to play. We will have to wait and see what they do in the coming months. My best guess is that when the rich have their dollars stolen from the Government they will not have as much to spend

People that were rich before the new tax rates will be rich after the new tax rates and it won't stop them from buying or leasing a new car.

People want new sponsors outside the industry, more coverage,etc..
You just can't get this without semi's,pimped out bikes,...It's 2013 now, each sport is evolving.
So why do we need to go back to the way it was in the 90s?

Maybe J-Star was never intended to be the sole sponsor? Or the hunt was always on for additional sponsors? I don't know.

I do think this was a great opportunity to come in and make your statement about your dissatisfaction on the tax situation, though. Smile

Yes. The people who buy cars from JStar are not the ultra rich. But their taxes have gone up considerably, both State and Federal, as have the middle and lower classes. I would guess that the majority of JStars customers make 75-150.

P, I think you are wrong on that. People that are rich now will still be rich. But the rich will curb their spending....guaranteed.

The reason I chimed in on this post to begin with is after I read where Mickleson will most likely leave Cal because 62% tax rate is a crime. Of course he will still clear 30 mil a year, but that is not going to keep him from moving out of state. This affects us middle class in Cal, the ones who work on Phil's estates, serve him food and sell him cars.

100% of my clients are filthy rich. I expect our business to drop considerably in the coming year. So now instead of middle class me going to Jstar to buy a nice BMW I will be going to the Kia dealer shopping for a piece of shit. Well maybe not , but you get my point.

That is a completely diffrent picture than what KennyT is trying to paint. JStar is not going to be hurt by taxes going up on the rich because they don't cater to the mega/ultra rich. They cater to the middle class. In terms of Federal taxes the middle class is only getting hit by the payroll tax. That shouldn't be enough to prevent people from buying a car if they need one. I'm not sure what the increased taxes in California are, but I thought they were only on millionairs.

If anything I would think that funding a team would be a big hit to a dealership like that no matter what their tax rate was/is.

I get the theory, but I don't see it actually playing out. Phil Mickleson probably isn't going to move out of California, even with all of his big talk. The tax hit that he is going to get isn't gonig to curb his spending habits one bit. He's just pissed that the government is getting more of his money. That's just MHO. How may hundreads of millions of dollars is he worth?

For the record, my comment was not directed to the JDR team but the industry as a whole. It's no secret that many teams struggle securing sponsorship, the industry cannot survive off itself. The coverage that the sponsors get from TV and print and online media doesn't cut it. Their has to be something more.

I lurk here quite a bit but I am always fascinated by the discussions of sponsorship. I worked on a team from 97-99 that was both privately and sponsor funded. That being said I know very little of sponsor dealings but i do know how they effected the team.

I pose a few questions... Do you suppose that in the case of TwoTwo Motorsports that Steve Astephen did not travel every avenue possible for funding ... Ken Block seems to have a good amount of both team funding and exposure.. WMG is plugged in from Nascar to Disney.. If the money is there he would find it.( I am not sure of his roll with RCH but he does work with Hart as well )

I don't compare moto to Nascar in any way but I do try to draw comparisons from/to NHRA. Those team are wildly expensive to fund and are also going through growing pains.. Basically in NHRA the top 16 or so teams have large outside sponsors. So should our top 20 teams be in the same shape?

Finally Moto has a slight identity issue IMO.. Think about the first 5 motorsports that come to mind.. What of those is the focus of promotion.. for example Monster Jam... If Grave Digger rolls to my sons school whom is driving it is irrelevant.
"It's GRAVE DIGGER daddy!

Im short on time .. But What is the focus of Moto exposure Team...Athlete...Vehicle.. Sponsor.. Number.. The sport of moto is all over the place in this aspect and I am not sure the answer has been found.. But when it is it will have to be adopted industry wide.
From a marketing standpoint . Think McGrath.. Carmichae../ . MotoXXX..Motocomcepts / Gieco..Team Peak... All wildly different approaches all pretty successful in the sport..

I get that Steve, and do not disagree. But why then can a rider "point out" of that class, and be forced either to rider the premier class or seek other forms of racing or another career ? I've never heard of anybody pointing out of the premier 450/supercross class.

I get that Steve, and do not disagree. But why then can a rider "point out" of that class, and be forced either to rider the premier class or seek other forms of racing or another career ? I've never heard of anybody pointing out of the premier 450/supercross class.
The only thing waiting at the end of the 450 class is a walk off a cliff. I do think having some incentives to move up to the big boy class is a good thing, but I don't like that we have a one-way career path for the riders. For example, in any of NASCAR's series you'll find guys on the way up, and guys on the way down through their careers.

We need a 650 class.

P - if you're "middle class", I highly recommend a thorough review of the 2013 tax code. We are getting pelted left and right (specifically in deductions and pre-tax income allotment). Those of us making between $100-250K can expect an 8-25% increase in taxes over 2012 (again, depending largely on the use of itemized deductions like property taxes, mortgage insurance, etc).

I don't personally know Steve or anyone from WMG, but I know who they are and what they have done for action sports. I respect them and believe that they leave no stone unturned. However, I do wonder if they have a guy working 80 + hours a week hitting the phones making new contacts looking for the next big sponsor or do they rely on existing relationships and wait for the phone to ring? It's probably a combination of both, but I don't know for sure. For all I know they do make 50+ phone calls a day.

The biggest issue that our sport faces is exposure. I would really like a look at their presentations and see what they are offering in return for the $$$ they are asking. It's no secret the more exposure you get the more you can ask for sponsorship. Their are a number of different ways that are currently not being utilized that would make a difference. In this economy advertisers/sponsors need to know the return, everything these days is measurable and if it cannot be measured it's off the table.

I like your point on who is the focus, that is a whole other can of worms that leads into even more possibilities....

Drop the details on that because that's news to me. When was Mortgage Insurance (I think that you meant Mortgage Interest) touched? Give a few details. You might want to start a thread in Non-Moto to inform more people.

Not trying to argue with you, this is good conversation.....
Guys on the way down can race arenacross. Just look at what Buddy Antunez, Darcy Lange, and Josh Demuth did, and now Tyler Bowers is doing.....
Up here in the great white north, our Pro riders make more $$$$$ at local regional races and arenacross events than they do at our nationals.

Yes. The people who buy cars from JStar are not the ultra rich. But their taxes have gone up considerably, both State and Federal, as have the middle and lower classes. I would guess that the majority of JStars customers make 75-150.

You still don't get it.....

When the wealthy stop earning, spending, and investing their money, the lower classes, including the middle class, lose their fucking jobs. Like the saying goes, how many jobs have you had working for someone with an income of $75k?? You can only grow the government payroll so much, despite the muslim's best efforts.

You tax the hell out of them, thereby shucking their incentive to work harder, and they just work less. Or retire and sit on their money. Unfortunately, all the clueless sheep that voted for Obama and his class warfare lack the sense to grasp this concept.

I contend that is what is happening here, and will be happening to others that see big chunks of their disposable income going to the Guvment in the form of taxes.

A bump in taxes on the wealthy is not going to stop them from earning, spending, and investing their money, at least not the bump that they are getting from the Federal Government.

I hope that you don't actually believe that second paragraph. Did you know that there was a time when the top Federal Income Tax rate was over 90%?
