You may be at somewhat of a disadvantage on the start due to h.p., but you can negate that by being good on the trigger. After that, some very basic rules apply. Turn the throttle on sooner, and all the way to the stop, not just as far as your wrist will turn. (You'll figure out what I mean. Maybe.
Charge into the corners and intimidate people doing so. This ain't golf. You knock the occasional guy over, sucks to be him. Don't be a jerk, but it'll happen.
Get on the brakes later and harder. Again, later than the guy in front of or beside you. Maintain momentum, because speed lost is speed you have to regain. Crucial on a 125.
Don't follow people into corners. They fall off coming into or in the corner and you're piled up on top of him or waiting for the parking lot attendant to straighten the mess out and 9 guys go around you. Go wide sometimes, even if it means it will mean the same gap at the exit of the corner. Other guy falls and you're up a position. Especially true at the Dunes.
Be smooth. Learn good form and speed will come. It's not all about winning off the hop. Staying healthy is the key to enjoying racing. Get banged up early and you will become disenchanted very quickly. Ride properly, don't go wild and ride over your head trying to stay in front of a kid who caught you out of nowhere. He's probably going to smoke your ass anyway, because he read this memo and paid attention. Let him go, a broken leg isn't worth a $10 piece of plastic. Race for the fun, not for the win. Those will come in time.
On the start, waiting for the gate to drop, don't roll the throttle off and on like everyone else at your level. Practice starts, and know where you should have your throttle. That's a huge advantage right there.
Hit the gym. Now. Find someone who can give you a fitness program geared to moto, or at least read up on some weightlifting. Focus maybe a little more on Cardio, but strength is important. Don't think you're going to show up at the Dunes season opener and smoke everyone. Adrenalin and fatigue will have your tongue in the spokes and sitting down in 2 laps. It only goes downhill from there.
No matter your results, don't blame the bike. Look in the mirror. Ride that bike as it should be ridden and smoothly, and good results will follow. Most of all, have fun. That's why you're out there.
There you go
