That's funny, I've ripped that track myself, didn't even recognize the photo it's so old. Haha
Kenny Keylon was still an amatuer in 78,he turned pro in 1980, im pretty sure like me, he raced the amatuer day of this National..
I think my uncle did, too. I know he ran the Dade City series 78/79 on a CR125.

Warren Reid knew how to go pretty well on an old Elsinore. The second pic is what the 125's were all about. WFO and on the ragged edge of control. Impossible for some, just a Sunday drive for others.

I thought this thread was best 125 rider ever, not cull the lists back to 1975 to see who ever got a top five moto finish.

Mike Brown and Warren Reid were exceptional racers, Brownie more than Reid IMO, who had great careers. But they weren't even the best riders of their time, let alone over the years of the class.

Here's my shot at the ten best in the class (considering how they did in other classes). Some guys, like Bayle, Everts, Pastrana, are better riders overall than some on that list, but just trying to nail the 125s, no way do I expect agreement.

Stewart
RC
Barnett
Smith
Hannah
Rahier
Glover
H. Everts
Lamson
Toss up between Geboers and Henry

From O'Mara down there's a bunch of guys that could slot in there, but I don't think there's a lot to argue about with the top eight other than order, which will likely entail cross pond pissing.

I did also, best 125 rider, thats why i went by Titles won,,
Gaston Rahier 3 x 125 champ
Harry Everts 3 x
Broc Glover 3 x
Mark Barnett 3 x
Alessio Chiodi 3 x
Ricky Carmicheal 3 x
Theres alot of great mx guys that have 2 titles in the 125 class, and i would include Marty Smith, i got a 75 cr 125 because of him,, but James Stewart should be included because he has the most wins in the USA,in the 125 class,, imo...

Titles won can beg the question of the best ever on on a 125, though definitely a primary factor. Glover is a classic example of that, as great a rider as he was across all sizes. One of those titles, 77, was skewed by Hannah losing a race on purpose to prevent LaPorte from winning it. That same year Hannah dissipated his riding across all three outdoor classes rather than focus on 125's. Smitty's 76 campaign was epic, racing both the GPs and Nationals and constantly plagued by an unreliable bike, yet still placing second in the US and third in the GPs.

Have you ever seen Unadilla 98? Robbie Reynard reeled him in and went by him so fast he nearly peeled Splitfire graphics clear off the thing.

See...no one EVER, EVER did that to Jimmy Stewart 259.

Such an iconic pic of Reid and the 125 of that era. He was totally the face of FMF back then, and with being a 125 guy in SoCal when it was the center of the universe, especially as far as 125's, and the 125's were exploding, it was a real rock star pop.

James Stewart was the fastest 125 rider.

Let me tell you a story.... In my first year I raced pro at southwick in 05 AMA still had the top 125/250 riders in the same practice group, this meant Rc and Stewart were together in the sand 125 against 450 Saturday practice, James strait up had fastest times in practice. The raw speed and strength mixed with his crazy talent to flow perfectly around every sand burm was beautiful. He really knew how to ride a two stroke to the max.

Stewart was the product of every fast guy that came before him. He truly took it to the next level.....or maybe two levels. Talk about the end of an era.

And now that the sport is all about 250F's and 450's, do you as a racer think that the racing is actually any better or just faster, more dangerous and more expensive?

That's a hard question to answer, I think racing has gotten better to watch from a fans perspective because there's so much depth in the classes but I also think we have more depth because 4 strokes have made it easier for a wide range of racers to be at that competitive level. Privateers these days can build good bikes with the support and money to have whatever they want on there bike, back in the day very few racers knew how to build a good bike and only factory racers had equipment that killed the competitions. Also two strokes were not easy to go fast on, it took skill to get them going fast and keeping momentum up around a track took talend and skill, 4 strokes don't take as much perfection on hitting everything perfect to keep going fast all you have to do is twist the throttle and have the strength to hold on. 4 strokes took the fun out of racing and made the sport an athletic sport where the strongest riders win. So yes our sport is more dangerous now because 4 strokes have given us more power then most people can handle, and yes it is much more expensive but we have a lot more technology to invested in the bike. Has it made racing any better? I think racing hasn't ever been this exciting ever for the fans to watch but at our risk its getting out of hand, nobody wants to see another sx season have the top 7 guys all get injured at some point. I think the biggest thing in our sport that needs to change is the performance enhancing drugs, at this point the only top riders not doing them is James Stewart and chad reed, the rest are being pumped full of crap that makes these guys monsters and its organized cheating and the sport knows its going on and does nothing about it to stop it.

In 2004 Stewart was on the KX125:

and in 2005 he was on the KX250:

In 2004 he smoked them all on the 125 (had a bad start in moto 2 and had to pass a lot of them)
In 2005 he went DNF & DNS on the KX250

Watch the last few SX rounds of 2005. He pushed everyone's shit in on that KX250. Some could say that RC was in "championship mode" at the last few rounds that year, but not even he could touch Jimmy on the 250 indoors. I really think that was the high water mark for two-strokes and supercross. 2005. The sport as a whole, peaked.

Branden Jesseman gave Stewart a few good battles on a 125. Not many riders can say that.

Barnett....hands down! He was winning 250 Supercross at the same time, and wasn't riding 125's because it was a "transition class" to the big bikes.

Said this before and I will say it again.

James Stewart is hands down the fastest 125 rider ever.

I dont care about titles and dudes back in the day, I am talking pure speed. He was untouchable.

Chad Reed was a GP champion and got embarrassed and down right clowned by James Stewart on a 125. Don't care who was on the track James would work them.

RC was really fast as well but James was scary fast.

I think James Stewart was the "best 125 racer ever."

Of course he had better equipment than those before him, and he had developed knowing the discoveries made by those before him. This is why it is wrong to compare riders from different era's (strictly speaking).

However, in his time, James was just so much better than all of the other riders in the class at that same time. You also have to remember that by 2004, most of his opposition were riding superior bikes to him (250F's).
