I feel like there was a lot left out of the episode about the family break up with him and his mom what is the story? I know they are not going into crazy about if but I felt like there is more to it than turmoil or however he described it

It's really a family matter and should remain as such. They would share it if they wanted their laundry displayed in public. JMHO...

x2.

While it's cool to know these things, they are private matters and it might be best for it to remain that way. We really don't need to know about family business other than to just fulfill our morbid curiosities. When I watched last weeks episode I had mixed feelings about how in depth it got about Josh Grant's mom, sometimes broken relationships can be repaired but when something like this comes out it seems it may really do a lot of irrepairable damage do all involved. It has got to make it tougher for either party to swallow their pride and extend an olive branch when the whole moto community has now formed strong opinions and are passing judgement.

Great episode. Is Milsaps dad totally out of the picture?

I've worked with my mom before in a corporate setting and I can tell you that it gets old, real quick! I can see where Davey would grow to resent her involvement in his racing career. Not her fault by any means, but is counter to the mother / son roles especially as son's maturity / masculinity further develops.

If my mom would have constantly been poking at me and grabbing my chin guard and pushing me non-stop I imagine I would have grown tired of it and wanted to separate from the situation as well. He is clearly one of the fastest riders in the world and does give her her share of credit for that though. Hopefully they will all be happy in life and have no regrets no matter what happens in the relationship.
It would be interesting to know what Tony thinks of this season of the show so far?

I was thinking the same thing but you guys make a great point about keeping it personal.

My GF has taken to watching the show with me, I know shocking. She commented afterwards that he needs to grow up, that if not for his mother he would never have achieved what he has in racing and that you only have one mother. I argued that we don't know the whole story and that its hard to pass judgment without knowing.

Part of me agrees with her a bit. Clearly she sacrificed alot for his racing career and was very influential in his development especially after his dad checked out. No doubt Davi was always talented as hell, maybe he could have made it without his mothers help?

Anyways, I hope for the sake of Davi and his son that they are able to repair the relationship. Somethings become clearer with time.

I know Davi posted a message this past year about his dad being in an accident and I think he almost ended up having his foot amputated. I had the impression that Davi and his Dad had nothing to do with each other, but after that happened I guess it changed my mind. I'll try and find his twitter post when that happened.
I really liked hearing the story about him and Carlos and connecting those dots.

Yes, it was a street bike crash. If I recall correctly it was last year towards the end of the Nationals when Davi got hurt. His son was born the same week.

Millsaps' mom made me rage so hard I wanted to punch a hole in the wall. She makes Tony Alessi look like Gandhi.

-Grabbing riders by their chin guard, telling them they suck.
-Telling a crying 12 year old that some nonsense on the track is going to make him a better rider.
-Telling a 65cc rider to huck a triple that most big bikes wouldn't hit and feeling good about it.

I have no doubt that she has played a big part in Davi's succes, but MY GOD, do I understand that Davi doesn't want to talk to that woman at this point.

You have to take into consideration that some of those kids that get the opportunity to train there have probably been catered to a little too much in their young lives. That has to cost several thousand dollars a month plus bikes, maintenance, travel expenses, etc, etc.. Having someone kick their ass a little probably is not a bad thing. If she doesn't deliver results, would anyone send their kid there? Of course if a parent does it, they get labeled "mini dad". If that isn't a rider or parents cup of tea then their kid probably won't be there.

i would rather not know the story, and not speculate about what happened.

hopefully they both will watch the episode and it will cause a chain reaction of coming to terms with their differences.

i've never gone more than a week without talking to either of my parents, can't imagine how hard that would be for all parties involved.

what's worse, having a mom/son relationship like Davi and Colleen or having your mom steal/lose/take all your money like Josh Grant? I think this years shows have been the best. You get to see the real side of Pro Motocross from the sacrifice to the wear and tear on a family and then when you finally get to the top, it's not always what it seems. This is stuff that you never get to see unless you know someone at that level. I love this sport and its part of my fabric but god knows I am glad my son doesn't.

I understand there is money issues with the Millsaps as well. Prob best they didn't go into it on The Moto. I hope they can someday work out their differences.

I was really surprised they didn't give Grant's mom a chance to tell here side of the story. And there is ALWAYS another side to the story. Maybe they asked her and she didn't want to.

It's standard practice with any kind of documentary, that if you hang someone's reputation out to dry, you give them a chance to defend themselves. Not that I am defending her, just saying it would have been a good idea.

He needs to get over it. He even said that she would make him feel bad for not practicing, but at the end of they day after he had gone out and done it he felt better. Obviously the way she pushed him helped him to get where he is. There's no doubt that she was hard on him, we could all see on the show how hard she was on the young riders. But, now being older, he should be able to take a step back and realize that she did it to help him and because she wanted him to succeed. And it worked. So stop being such a bitch Davy.

He catches some flack over his personality, they even mentioned that in the show, but he obviously is a pretty generous person. He loaned out his sweet ass motorhome to the Miles for Miracles crew for several months on the road for the coast to coast bike ride. When Jimmy Button broke his arm it got parked at my house for a week and a half. My cats got to spray the tires with good karma while it was there so I've been expecting good things out of Davey since then. The guy does have some good style on the bike. Hopefully he has a solid year in '13.

yeah her grabbing that kid by the chin guard...i was not ok with...that was over the top....of course some people on here will say it was tough love, and these kids need that....but those are probably the same people that said if someone grabs ur chin bar during an altercation on the starting line, then they deserved to have their jaw broke....

Yup, they are paying to get some tough love... The kids you talk to dont seem to hate her so they must be fine with it

My riding coach when I was on 80s used to take our seats off if we sat down too much and would use a stick to whoop us in the ass as we came by if we were going too slow or using improper technique.

Grabbing your chin guard and telling you that you're riding poorly, when your parents are basically putting more money into your little hobby than the vast majority of people make from working? Palease

EDIT: actually, I can see how that would get really old if it went on for most of my life. Couple of times during a riding camp isn't bad but living that way, eeek. Not necessarily the way she was doing it but just constantly being pushed and pushed.

BUT, I wonder how different other parents have been. You see the Tomacs who are well known for basically being the opposite of that, but then you hear stories of Big James and Mrs. Carmichael yelling at their kids for not doing certain jumps. I don't know, I think I would veer more towards the Tomac way of doing things than the Millsaps/Alessi way because that way, whether or not his career takes off or not, at the end of they day you can preserve that parent/son relationship and enjoy the ride more.

The best moto tv moment I have ever seen was big James calling malcom a "d" rider. That was the funniest shit ever.

I guess what I was wondering with the original post is it seemed like there was maybe some kind of beef with Daveys wife and the mom maybe or I got te impression the mom may be the one distancing herself from them. But whatever.

She seems like a hard ass and terr is no doubt some kids need that but I think to encourage kids to fight each other is silly and the helmet grabbing is a little much. Either way te kids are there for a reason but I don't know if the really know what try are getting into when they show up.

I wish she had a set of balls. I have been hit by a rock square in the nuts before while racing and it takes the wind right out of you.
As far as putting a bounty on Davi's head to try and get someone to punch him is a little out of hand. I have been in my fair share of fights and they have never benefited me at all in my racing career. I

I have always been competitive and really hate losing weather it be at beer pong or at the race track. Some people are born with it and some are not. Getting punched in the face does not bring that out.
11/20/2012 1:27pm
Having grown up as a wrestler (high school + college) I have seen this coaching technique many times over. Contrary to what alot of you believe it is effective. And I will add they only show half the story...the ugly half. I am sure Mrs. Milsaps is equally affectionate with these young riders as she is tough. Kids /athletes won't respond to someone who just yells and screams at them. but after a personal relationship is formed and respect is found, the desire to not disappoint the "teacher" is a powerful tool. careful not to fall into the films "edit". Ya know?

Some of you are saying that because Davi's mom worked him so hard he completely shut her out of his life? There has to be more than that to the story especially if he cut his sister out of his life too, but then again whose to say. She sounded like she didn't want to make amends with Davi either.

The details are none of are business but I'm real stoked for this new series. It touches down on the personal side of the sport that hasn't really been seen before. Good job guys keep up the good work!

I went to Gary Bailey Motocross School when I was 12. I had heard all the horror as a 12 year old of him making you jump stuff you didn't want to and hitting your hand with a stick and basically being a hard ass. The school was partially teaching technique and partially taking you out of your comfort zone.....mostly to open your mind up to what you are capable of and build confidence.

MTF looks similar to that. I would imagine that Davey got to the point where he just wanted to be a pro without having someone yell at him all the time. Coaches become different things as the athlete ages. His mom may have had a hard time pulling the plug from being a mini parent.

Davey seems very intelligent and genuine in his appreciation for what his mother taught him. In my opinion, as you become an adult your parents become some of your best friends and less of a parent. You never stop learning from your parents......it just happens in a different way.

If your kid can't take a little ass chewing then they should not be in sports period. That shit is tame compared to what junior high and high school football players go through.
