I broke my arm 8 weeks ago (radius) and finally got my arm out of cast 2 weeks ago :D
While i was at work today it just snapped when i pulled something !!!! So i'm due in for surgery 2moro (31st) was just wondering if anyone had any experience of helping bones repair, if any supplements work? what foods and drink to have etc, i have heard that taking vitamin D will help a lot with the mending
I was on que to start riding again at the start of january but with this now i'm looking more at march now Sad ! I really need to start riding a bit sooner as i will have important qualification races mid/end of march!

Any Info or help will be appreciated very, very much!

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, that's why milk is better than calcium pills. Maybe ask your Dr. about an electrical bone stimulator also. I used one with success after surgery on my Navicular(sp?).

Good luck!

When I broke my right scaphoid I drank ionic minerals to help the bones and a shit load of beer to "supplement" my bodies caloric needs to aid in the healing process : )

All kidding aside my doctor didn't really think they would help and after 3 months I had a non union and narcosis of the broken piece, he started talking fusion of the wrist and I asked if I could keep going with the ionic minerals... He thought I wouldn't help but said he would give it 6 more weeks.... To his amazement after 6 weeks there was bone growth and the narcosis had reversed! It still took another 4 months to be released and ride again as it was a nasty break!

This may be totaly anicdotal... But what the hell it couldn't hurt to try it! You can find them at any health food store... Not sure what you guys have over there in England but here I the states any vitamin shop or GNC should have them!

This time, if at all possible, get it internally fixated. Probably should have been fixed that way to begin with.

I broke a clavicle last April and after 8 weeks my Doc said it remained a 'non-union'. I was worried because at 25 this should have been an easy recovery. However, the severity of the break wasn't allowing the traditional figure eight brace to keep everything isolated. Surgery would have been a better option but hindsight is 20/20.

After that 8 week visit I bought an Exogen 4000 bone stimulator and made sure to keep the entire shoulder area more stabilized. I'm confident the bone stimulator helped in my case, coupled with plenty of rest, good eating, and vitamins. Ask your Doc if he would recommend one, and be sure to give it plenty of time to heal...Best of luck Barrs!

Your body burns up a lot calories trying to mend that bone. Do some research and find out what foods will provide the best "building blocks" for bone healing and also provide the calories needed.

Then get yourself into a solid rehab plan to bring that specific joint back on-line. Don't EVEN go riding until you've rehab'd it. That's a SERIOUS bone/joint to have broken...twice.

Good Luck!
