The thinner the grip the more natural grip strength you have and the easier it is to hold on.

I changed my grip from full waffle (glove size 9 or L) and went to no waffle and instantly felt the difference. Medium diamond compound works best for me. Also to completely eliminate arm pump I messed with my bar setup. I tried 3 bends with the same results but found that if I chopped 3/8" off each side my hands and forearms sat more in line. Arm pump gone.

So for me it was about fine tuning the setup a little. Every time I change bikes arm pump can come or go. Some guys though will have chronic arm pump regardless.

Main tips though. No fizzy drinks 24 hrs before you ride. Hydrate well starting the day before. Get in shape (3x30 mins cardio in the gym a week), lift weights (3x20mins a week), get the bike to fit you, ride as much as you can and train methodically.

On the bike training.

Practice like a race day. That advice has been given to me on training days when I was younger, a few National and GP riders that have been at the track that have had the time to talk about typical training on the bike. Although there moto times are a bit longer.

4 laps of the track to get warmed up and dial the track in. 1st lap steady and build your speed each lap. Rest for 10 mins.

Then 3 x 2 laps from a racing start going as fast as you can. This builds your raw speed and gets you used to charging as hard as you can from the get go where most arm pump kicks in. Do these within 5 mins of each other.

Then 2 x 10 lap motos. Go at 95% of your speed for 2 laps sprint 100% for 1 lap, then 2&1 and finally 2 & 2 hard laps to finish. On the sprint laps I change from going inside on the corners on one fast lap to outside on the next etc etc.

Finally one endurance moto. I normally do 1 x 30 minute moto at the end of the day at 90%. So if fast lap times are 2 mins you need to keep every lap within 2:12. I also focus on standing up for most of the moto and being as smooth as I can over the roughest lines i can find.

That works out to be a good constructive hour or so on the bike and is very similar to a race meeting. My practice day can be all done in 3 hours and is a very good workout as well as being constructive for racing. If your a woods guys, you need to do some practice on the trails you are familiar with and work with the same type of methods where you can loop a section and do some sprints etc to get used to speed.

I find it amazing that there are so many guys at the practice tracks going fast that go 10 seconds a lap slower on race day. All down to not pushing hard in practice. When then get to race day and raise there speed by a few % there body is not used to it and they get arm pump.

I second that, don't choke the chicken, use your knees.

Worst grip is a death grip.

ride more, keep knees tight and fingers on brake and clutch.

I always reckon thin grips helped the most with arm pump. I went with full diamond medium compound renthals. If I had full or half waffles...I would get out a stanley knife and slice all the waffle off!

while im slow, ive started using full waffle renthal grips and i think they work way better by spreading hand out more. is my solution that different from most people? although anything is better than those plastic grips my rt 180 had.

Half or full waffles in med or hard compound (waffle pattern down on half waffles). I always feel like I'm 'hooked up' to the grips without 'gripping' so much. If that makes sense....

ODI troy lee grips fit the best for me. Small grip, good texture, and a variety of colors and last for a while. I've had the same ones for the past 4 months and i ride about every weekend. But like they said, just ride more.

I also love the Troy Lee ODI grips. Running the no waffle soft compound renthals now and those do the trick but i like the grip ends on the ODI's better

Well said my friend, well said.

The best grips period, are the new ODI lock-on grips. integrated throttle tube, no more glue, no more wire. take them on and off at your leisure. they also come with hard plastic end-caps so no more torn grips in a fall.

knee braces helped me grip with my legs. plus i used to get it but i think it was in my head. if you do tho try hammer heed
its for cyclists to prevent cramping

ODI Grips.......

the white ones have an extra soft compound that is amazing. I personally run the Half Waffles, i have tried the Troy Lee ones....but they were a little too slim for my bigger hands. i have a buddy that has even bigger hands than me and he is now trying out the ODI Rogue grips which are way soft. he really likes them so far (4 rides on them).

I use the pillow tops as well. Use gorrilla glue to hold them on and never had a problem. I do go through a set of grips about every 4 races though. I hold pretty loose and the movement of my hand just wears them out. I love the feel though.
Edit: not the gorrilla super glue. Just the regular gorrilla glue. Also needs about 18hrs to completely set and you will be good to go. I always prep. and rough the surface. Scrap off old glue!

Tennis racket grip.

Seriously.

Loosen and elongate your fingers. Having elbows up, makes this grip feel natural. NO DEATH GRIP! In the air, stretch your fingers and breath and, look ahead while gripping with knees.

To be honest grips will make hardly any difference at all, i have raced since i was seven so ive had my fair share of arm pump:/
Ive tried many different ways of dealing with including thoes wrist bands and none of it has worked! The only thing i would ever recemend is this guide on how to deal with it and prevnt it,i got this for a XMAS present and it is brilliant! i never have to worry about coming in half way through a race ever again!woo! Here is a link to the guide, i would personally rate it a 10/10!

I use full diamond protaper grips, medium compound. But I have smaller hands so those fit best for me.

Grip with your knees. I just posted about doing some towel pullups in another thread. That helped me big time. But you have to try what works best for you. And it wont happen overnight, so dont try something one week and expect some miracle cure. I have problems with my throttle hand when I dont concentrate on using my legs to grip the bike and I just fight through it and make sure I keep riding.

Best thing is to ride and ride a lot. Even with arm pump, back it down and ride 80% but keep going as long as you can.

I have heard that, but never tried it. I also know people that take some asprin about 30 mins before riding to help.

Not sure if that works or not.
