I have enjoyed reading this thread. There are some good ideas here.

Some things that I would like to see are:

1) Some security to lead the drunks out and let the rest of us enjoy our afternoon. Just because you have a couple of beers, you aren't a bad person. Beer can bring in too much revenue to ban it. Just make sure that people are being responsible.

2) You should not have to pay extra for a pit pass !!!

3) More restroom facilities (my wife couldn't even go the last time we were at Washougal because they were so full she couldn't sit down).

4) All pro racing on Saturday (have amatuer racing on Sunday if you want) and let us have a day to travel home. My closest national is over 600 miles away.

5) Throw in a 125cc class for the top amatuers on Saturday.

6) All qualifying on Friday. Just a five lap practice for each class on Saturday.

7) Vendor row so the teams/riders can sell their stuff (percentage for series promoter/race promoter. Everyone makes money that way. I like the idea of having autographs at vendor row.

So much for now.

Good Thread.

Hopefully it is already in the works, but I would have the series go from the west to east coast. I am sure every truck driver, team owner, and privateer would too. Here are some figures I put together.

- The mpg for the privateer rig and semis are just generous estimates.

2008 Schelude

Miles To:

SANBERNARDIO 0
SACRAMENTO 437
WORTHAM 1811
MT MORRIS 1284
LAKEWOOD 1461
BUCHANAN 1084
BUDDS CREEK 677
NEW BERLIN 400
WASHOUGAL 2848
MILLVILLE 1800
SOUTHWICK 1249
DELMONT 466

Total 13517

Gallons for Semi 1931
Price per gallon 4.81
MPG (idling?) 7?

Fuel Cost for Semi $9,288

Gallons for Truck 901
Price per gallon 4.1
MPG 15

Fuel Cost for Privateer (excludes other travel) $3,694

Revised West to East Schedule

San Bernardio 0
Sacramento 437
Washougal, WA 604
Lakewood, CO 1248
Wortham, TX 867
Millville, MN 1010
Buchanan, MI 444
Mt Morris, PA 441
Delmont, PA 85
New Berlin, NY 374
Southwick, MA 182
Budds Creek, MD 407

Total 6099

Gallons for Semi 871
Price per gallon 4.81
MPG (idling?) 7

Fuel Cost for Semi $4,191

Gallons for Truck 406
Price per gallon 4.1
MPG 15

Fuel Cost for Privateer (excludes other travel) $1,667

- I'd guess there are around 15 semis at the races and who knows how many privateer rigs going to each or most rounds.....there could be a good chunk of time, money, and oil saved.

Off topic, but isn't a pro license for outdoors a little dumb to begin with?

I understand for supercross, as riding those tracks becomes a safety issue, since notevery privateer has access to a sx track.

But any up coming pro has ridden outdoors his whole life. With the qualifying process (which i hate timed qualifying), if your fast enough to get in, shouldn't that be license enough to race an outdoor?

Just make sure there is an age requirement.

Nationals should take a big hint from NHRA. I attended the first one of my life earlier summer, not a huge fan of drag racing, but I have to say it was WAY cool.

Pit pass included in ticket price is a must I think, so to make that work, charge everyone a little more than normal, those who use the pass get a little deal vs buying it seperate, those who don't are paying a little more than normal. It will even out to the promoter either way.

Flarider's initial list makes perfect sense.
-currently fans and 85% of the guys racing Sunday are treated like shit, so guess what happens?
-take notes from SX, and X games, and freaking pro wrestling for that matter.
-Why do a few AMA employees have so much control on race weekend? Those folks act as if they are being forced to be there. Look around at the money the teams and P-teers are spending to make this thing happen.
-rules, and their enforcement change from track to track.

While on paper, scheduling the races by mileage might seem correct, it creates other problems you may be unaware of.

For example, Red Bud is always July 4th weekend and others are scheduled around other specific dates and events.
You cannot load down some city or small town with thousands of people the same weekend as the annual pig in a poke festival or a massive concert or event.

Scheduling is a lot more than drawing a line on a map and saying "your race is this date"

Scheduling involves other events being scheduled in order to ensure rooming and hospitality is readily available.

Imagine the bitching there'd be if there were no hotels available near Budd's Creeek because of some big car race or parade?

Hmmm.. So when he walks in, do the AMA interviewers go... "NEWBIE, STFU!" ? Tongue

Actually, great suggestions that are mostly common sense things. Which everyone knows, common sense and the AMA/NPG are like oil and water.

Will DC get it going for next year? Time will tell.

Make every national like Daytona. Tracks on the infields of the speedways. Racing at night under the lights. Mainly joking here, but it would be successful. More so than anything you can do for the existing outdoor nationals. At least for the general publics interest and Corporate sponsors.

This is a HUGE problem that can't be ignored. The logistics need to be a problem solved by the promoters, not the bank accounts of the participating teams /riders. Should an East Coast rider go back out for Washougal, or run a few Canadian rounds, local races, or stay home and train? AMA points outside of the top 10 do very little for a race budget. As you already mentioned, and Bobby M said best, it's "eye's on" that help acquire sponsorship and other dollars.

Sigh....Rewind....Play.....

TV-friendly. John Q Public-friendly. Focus on fitness requirements. Video game telemetry presentation. Rider radios (for fan eavesdropping). Reduce risk so your races are more interesting (because you all your riders are, GASP, racing, instead of convalescing or retiring).

Sigh...

I want you to keep in mind something Roger Edmonson of DMG said in the initial interviews after the buyout (paraphrasing);

If a racer needs the money from a race to get to the next race, that is not a professional racer and what we want. Teams and racers should have every race paid for before walking out the door.

Essentially saying if a team or rider is living from race to race, that's not what they want. They want professional teams that can line up funding for the entire season before they head to the first race.
You're not going to get much sympathy put of DMG

(and before you say it, NPG is only LEASING the Nationals from DMG....DMG is still the boss, rule maker and owners)

flarider,

Explain the "leasing" thing. Also I thought it was MX Sports, not NPG, that was doing the the Nationals promoting. Also how does that work? Seems like we are getting another level of management in here (not necessarily bad, just different).

As a RACE fan, I would just love to see less predictable race results every week.

I wish there was a real advancement system for the lites class that kept the 450 gate FULL of top riders and letting the "overflow" into the lites class.

Maybe run timed practice as they do now with no seperation between bikes, just 4 random groups. top 40 race the Premier race, bottom 40 run the lites devision. Obviously there needs to be incentive to stop sandbaggers.

I understand the position that DMG takes regarding adequate funding to put a bike in the Sunday race. That's where everyone wants/needs the sport to go. But that will take time and money. It does need funding/sponsorship from the outside, but that growth HAS to have the participation of the existing talent. The fact remains that outside sponsorship is not available to fill 2 gates of 40 superb riders every round. It makes good sense to accomadate riders that are not in a factory rig. We are spending a lot of money to run 12 (now11) rounds. That should be viewed by AMA/NPG as an asset. Believe me, it's not.
The polished product that you suggest is critical. Needs to start from the inside out.
Budd's Creek was still huge. Beautiful place, awesome preperation. This sport has such widespread appeal,

1. Team/Rider Merchandising. NPG/AMA/DMG have every right to licensing fee, but in return teams and racers should be allowed a vendor location along a prominent "midway" outside of the pit paddock area and all should be allowed equal billing and exposure, no "ghetto"

2. Autograph sessions and rider "meet and greets" are to be held on the merchandising midway. This will increase exposure of the merchandising trailers, help a rider/team increase sales and frees up crowded space in the paddock (pit) area.

3. Natural berms should be built along the track sides, preferably tiered, in order to allow better viewing for those not standing at the fence line.

4. Improved sound and spectator communication boards in a modular system that can be easily broken down and packed into a semi-trailer and hauled from race to race. Speakers should include several speaker arrays that can be hung from cranes and/or scaffolding/scissor lift which can also be used for TV camera platforms. Additional spectator information should be several scoring pylons placed throughout the property showing the running order in live time via timing loops placed throughout the track.

5. Diamondvision (large video) screens (at least two) placed in areas with limited viewing.

6. More hard bathrooms for women only, or at minimum, many trailer potties that are kept clean, for ladies only.

7. Sponsor/VIP tents with hard floors and A/C. Those with the most money won't be hardcore MX Fans, just people with money. Treat them like they expect to be treated at any other motorsport event...don't make them and their spouses muddy up their nice shoes...that's just stupid.

8. Better and more visible security, in the parking lots as well.

9. Shade, shade, shade....it's pretty damn hot in the summer, make your customers more comfortable by providing shade which can be easily done and you can even sell it for additional income.
How? Shade sail cloth. Triangular sail cloth strung between poles, which can even be raised, lowered and tilted for various sun and weather conditions.
They can be paid for through advertising...print sponsor logo on them
See example below:

10. Predetermined wash bay areas outside of or away from the paddock area to keep it from getting muddy and keep it a more professional appearance

11. Play areas for kids. Many kids get board throughout the day standing at the fence in the sun, they need an outlet. Build a couple play areas and even offer "child check"

and that's to start....
11 is like a Camp Loretta's deal. I like that concept! Like a national day care deal.
