Since you do want to compare them, from 1986 to 89 The only problem with RJ was his starts and injurys, and Bailey on a 500 which sadly didnt last long enough, he won around 65% percent of the races those years and from 1986 to 88 he won 6 TITLES, In 1989 he won the first 5 races in a row then was landed on by Denny, he woud have had more. non the less he accomplished more Wins than Ward and matched him with 7 titles in over 100 less races!!!! Also of Wards 7 titles he won 4 of them against RJ were RJ won 6 against Ward.

Ward was the second best rider of the 1980's I am a big fan of his, but he is no RJ. In my eyes RJ was the best of all time not named Ricky Carmichael.
ricky johnson was just because of the Honda juggernaut. just kidding but where does the Golden Boy fit into this winning two 500 titles on the "worst" bike ever?

Park Boys...We're on the same page...The 70s and the 80s were the Golden Days of Motocross. Not really that many big factory rides and the big money wasn' t there yet. A lot of riders fighting for a few sponserships.Lots of shops helping out the riders and a few non factory rides from the likes of Fox and Emler. Cheers.

Wardy was a big deal to our generation in the '70s that started in the minis. we all watched as he and myerscough graduated to the big bikes to take on the hannahs and marty smiths and all the other cats who started on the big bikes. you could go to the early mini o's , then known as the winternationals in jacksonville and see wardy live, he was almost always there and appeared often at the tuscaloosa nma events before the split the country up in to regions.

i remember in '81 he and o'mara pushed each other so hard fighting it out in the nats, they were doing david bailey type magic all over the track just to gain a 1/4 sec on the rest of the field.

he represented the mx alumni very well in later years in the IRL and the super moto. and now, in these tough economic times, he comes back to his roots and starts his own team. i will always cheer for team jeff ward, no matter who his rider is.

I have never liked Kawasaki brand of bikes, always been a Honda guy. So I never rooted for Jeff Ward but great respect for the man. He was is a great champion. But in my mind RJ was faster and if RJ hadn't have gotten the career ending injury we might not have a king of SX. I think on equal machines and training tech RJ and Wardy would run with MC, RC, RV, and Bubba. They both had the drive to do anything it took to win and neither could stand to loose.

Anyways...what was the quote from DeCoster? He was talking about Jeff Ward from one of the Des Nations where Wardy was riding the 500...and Roger was very impressed how Jeff steered the big Kawi with the throttle around the hard pack corners, feet up. I think it was 89, but I could be wrong.

Love Jeff Ward, hope he stays around for a long time as a team owner/manager.

You'd never guess skis were easier on his body by watching him and Victor Sheldon go at it back in the day. Those two had some incredible races.
