I was in the music industry many years ago and she is absolutely on the money.....it is a beast.
She should either quit her bitching and get back into the game. Or continue to be out of public eye.
Or do something about it, and change things up.
She knew what she was getting into when she started, and if she didnt, she should have informed herself before signing her contracts.
The music business controls the output of any artist that participates in that industry.
Up until very recently you didn't have a choice but to play their game by their rules.......otherwise no one would ever hear your music.
The music industry effectively held a gun to your head when you signed a contract......it's either this or nothing.
Independent releases were small change until the internet gave every band a direct line to their fans.
Ask yourself why the recording industry is suing the pants off everyone in sight over internet rights......
Because they are losing the giant stream of revenue that only they could handle previously.
Nobody forced her to be a musician but they damn sure did force her to play by their rules or else.
The music business grinds up and spits out anyone that doesn't play the game.
Lauren Hill was put into a position where she had to make a choice to either stay in that restrictive system or go underground to get away from it.
It was a neccesary period of time that she didn't earn any money for her record label and as such didn't pay taxes.
Now that they are able to work her out of the restrictive contract she was in Lauren has made arrangements to pay her back taxes with the full admission that she should do so and the explanation about why the payment was delayed.

I should have been more clear when I said not making money....I meant not releasing new material or entering into new contracts that generate revenue.
Even without releasing new music she would still have income form publishing and residuals.
That small amount is what was in question I believe.
And that is Gross, before paying all of the various taxes, managers and fees.
Not a lot of money when you consider the dollar amounts at stake in todays music industry.
Pit Row
Even with 10% out for agent fees, that's $360K per year, on average. For someone who was laying low, staying out of the celebrity life, that's a boatload of money. Even if she'd paid the taxes, she'd have had over $200K to live on each year.
Not turning out new material is no excuse for not paying taxes on the income you do receive, and her income was substantial for someone desiring a simple life....
Try 6-9% for the booking agent.....10% for the manager........10% for the lawyer.
This was about more than taxes dude and you don't seem to understand that.
This was about getting free from a system that she felt was smothering her.
Have you ever sat in room and negotiated with a record company?
I have and I've also seen a few friends in the business get royally screwed if you haven't you won't understand.
I'm not sure why she'd be paying a booking agent if she isn't working. The money she made during that time looks to be royalties, not show income.
And I think I got my math a bit wrong the first time around. $600K per year minus 20% (agent and attorney) would still leave her $480K before taxes, which she wasn't paying. After taxes she'd still have been clearing over $300K.
Being pissed off at whoever you signed a contract with really isn't a good reason to stop paying taxes.
Maybe you have never taken a stand because of your principals or conscience so there is really no way to make you understand.
If you want to know why agents would have to be paid despite the fact that "she isn't working" look up the word retainer.
Does her "going underground" absolve her from contractual duties? How does that differ than simply her refusing to do anything for the recording label?
Did she collect any revenue/salary during those years?

She has probably forfeited a large amount of cash in future revenue to her record label over this in order to be released.
There is no salary but she would have still accrued royalties on past works that would bring in the income in question.
That is the amount that she settled with the government over.
I get it that there are issues in the music industry. I'm not fighting that. But, what she did really doesn't explain why she couldn't have her business team pay her taxes. Maybe I'm just not getting it.
