Comparison of cost to race Amateur day at Nationals

Edited Date/Time 6/22/2012 7:43pm
I am just curious what some of the nationals charge to race Amateur day including admission and camping.

I just tallied up what it will cost in fees to Washougal Mx Park to bring my family. My 1 son and I would race two classes each.

race fee $50 x 4 $200 (gate entry is not included in race fee)
admission $60 per person x 4 $240 (this is without pit access)
camping fee $60 $60

total $500 in fees for me and my family to be there for a couple days.

Plus the cost of fuel and all the other expenses we are probably looking at at least another $500 or $600 bringing it up to $1,100 or $1,200. I've got the money but just really not sure the value is there.

Are these fees in line with other national venues?

The Value Question is one that only you can answer; yet, I know your answer.

One time I calculated what it would cost to drive from NC to Budds to race amateur day, which only has one moto. It broke down to $100 a lap, not counting practice.
I stayed home.

Anyone know if Carolyn Huffman is on her Meds this year? When she is in her manic state it really makes it hard to fork her over the cash. She went psycho on me and my 10 year old a few years ago and I haven't been back as a paying customer since.

Well...

The local casino is looking into building a track.

Other than that...the only tracks around here are private tracks.

They've still got a track or two down in Red Bluff.

The terrain around Red Bluff looks like primo moto country with those rolling hills of Oak trees. I always build several tracks along the highway there while I'm driving to SoCal Smile

I'm with ya Sharkey, I haven't talked to anyone that is going this year yet. I may end up at Mnt View or Tracktors place that weekend Smile Maybe just show up to watch the pro races for a few hours, I can usually get hold of industry passes.

Steel City will cost me $120(2 adults, 3 children but they are under 6 so they are free) for gate fee's for fri-sun, plus $50 camping fee. Free practice Friday and $30 per class sunday. Not sure if i'm going to do 1 or 2 classes yet so im looking at $200-230 worth of fees depending on how many classes I run. If the real feel is in the 100's this year again I will probably only be doing one. This obviously isn't including gas, food, and beer.

I will never understand why track owners and promoters feel this is a good idea. With the rising cost of racing (bikes, fees, fuel, parts, etc.), all it takes is one bad experience at a venue and that could be the straw that breaks the camels back. Sometimes these promoters and track owners forget they are running a business that is a luxury to begin with.

It's pretty amazing, treat your customers like shit and expect them to pay out the wazoo. Ever since the freak out incident with Carolyn I honestly have had such a hard time even wanting to go to the place.(I haven't paid them a penny since, I've only been on free industry deals three times since 06) I went to Hangtown a couple of years ago and it seemed pretty mellow but I didn't race. I'm going to try to make a few of the Thursday night Motocross races at PIR this year (not tonight though) that looks like a fun track and I keep hearing from people what a well run organization that is.

(When I was asking him H-T-F he closes some of these deals where I jus' know he took a HUGE ration of SHIT...and is abused, accused and called names: No Shit!)

So, one of the Infamous Moto-Families went KooKoo on you...? Think about it...should ya be surprised? You've been in the Moto-Racer community how long, now? And, you're from the N.W.M.X. scene where you sum'sa'bitches run over us out-a-towners as bad as The Michigan Mafia does...Albany ring a bell...you mean Sum'Sa'Bitches!??

Let it GO.

Enjoy that awesome drive along the River and go watch the kids Rail one of the BEST tracks in America.

Besides, You HAVE to go!

We went to Hi Point this year. We arrived on Thursday night. Paid for our tickets, VIP camping. Friday we rode practice, free. Saturday we cruised the pits, watched some great racing and met some new friends . Sunday went home. Totally worth the 7hr drive! Planing on hitting up Unadilla this year as well.

Just received a post card yesterday from Unadilla. Admissions Thurs-Sunday is $70 per adult, $30 per kid. pre-entry is $30 per class or $40 post entry. Overnight parking(camping) is $50 per vehicle. Amateur races are on U2 track and are Friday and Sunday.

Amateur day race fees at Washougal are REDICULOUS! I showed up in '10 on wed's to register to race thursday since I didn't pre enter. When I got to the window and was told $80 for my one class I told them to shove it and just ended up watching the races all week, also that was the only race that year that required an ama membership so I had already spent $40 on that, $120 to race 1 class..... i don't think so. I did race last year in the rediculously sloppy condition's( which was eventually cancelled and we re raced Sunday) I will say it was a blast minus the slight hangover from watching national's the day before, It's not too often anymore that you get to drop a full 40 man gate.

2 racers, one dad, one mother, me, parking, fuel, food entry for 250A and 450A, 85 12-15, supermini, 3 pumpouts, 4 tires, and a few other misc items at GNC Oak Hill , $2480. And that was 2 yrs ago when gas was still in the $2.459 range. Now classes cost more, fuel is higher, geez don't get me started on groceries. Getting ready for NMA at Norman, may have to sell the pickup so we can have gas money. I don't know, it's getting really high dollar to hit any of the youth nationals any more. I'm hoping one of the other kids from my area will go with us to cut costs a little.
And of coarse the local races are starting to cost more also. Used to be you could have $60 and race, eat and have fun for a whole day at the races. Now its $40 a class, $5-10 gate fee, some places charge for parking too. Then NMA membership, AMA membership, District 22 membership just to race our area, more if you do more than one district. even on the local level its a $120+ for a one day race. We car pool and have 5-6 of us each weekend when we go out of town to race, and divide up the gas costs. Helps out, little crowded, but always fun.
Then look at the cost of health insurance, man a simple trip to ER is always $5000+. It sucks that something I enjoy so much is slowly slipping away from my reach because its costing so much.....Sad
And darius228, you are right about a full gate. Have not seen that, execpt for the 50 and 65 classes, for a long time. 250A was 3 guys last race. nobody can afford to go anymore..........

This segment of the motorcycle industry is slowly pricing itself out of the market. It sucks but it is happening right before our eyes.

It might be cheaper to go road racing now.

go to your local race tracks and if you are that involved in watching others ride then do that on tv. who cares about spectating most everyone in this sport is a rider

ride.

that kind of money spent on that stuff is a 2-3 weeks of local racing or more. The last time we went to the big pro race around here 1989. Seen enough drunk dumbasses to last me a lifetime.

guess i don't all warm and fuzzy standing in 100 degree heat watching 18 years puking and the like acting like some reject from animal house.

but I am old and well that "show" doesn't impress me much anymore.

I think you're right Wardy $1,500 for one amateur national weekend or spend that same amount on about 6 weekends of local races. I love watching the pros and all but I'd much rather be racing/riding myself.

Loretta Lynn regional qualifier :
AMA membership $39
AMA race fee $40
Track race fee $50
Practice fee $25 for 2 10 minute sessions approx 3-4 laps
gate fee $30 for 2 days or $25 for 1 day per person racer and spectator
$4 per gallon for motor home gas and pay camp fees $25 a night or pay $120 a night for hotel
I spent $850 to $900 to take my 2 kids to this and it was only 200 miles away
It was the practice session that burned my ass the most . They white flag them at the 7minute mark so everyone is off the track at the 10 minute mark . $25 for 6-8 laps is what was making me rage out! And you have to show up a day early to practice .

I just looked at a couple of the other nationals prices on line. According to what I found Washougal is right in line with the other nationals. Some of the tracks charge more for admission but less per class to race, but in the end it all comes out to about the same. Its a butt load of money any way you look at it, and the fact that you cant bring in alcohol to Washougal is brutal, but that said I havent missed one since '93. I will be there this year as well, I just might bring some KY for entry feesSad

Yes it is fun and one of the fun challenges is to see how much booze you can sneak in. I had a buddy one year add and extra phoney AC unit to the roof of his camper and he had it stuffed with beer , booze etc... Smile Security never even thought to look up there.

I was drunk at that race in 1989 after "AM" day! It was good.
