Well, I wasn't really looking for a project, but a free CR480 just fell in my lap a couple of hours ago, extra frame and engine lower end included. Any advice on where I can get reproduction plastic, seat cover, paint etc? Who's the best and who's the most reasonable price wise? Anyone have a decent gas tank for sale?

Last time I rode that bike, it was the worst thing I ever ridden, power sucked ,handling sucked, brakes sucked. what can I say? I rode all the bikes between 1978 and 1982

VMX plastic is nice and shiny. Haven't had any break either. Good stuff.

Thanks Newmann. Here's another one for you. Some one painted EVERYTHING on the bike, including the gas tank. What's the recommended way to restore a plastic fuel tank?

Aircraft paint stripper will remove the paint without damaging the plastic. Big question is how rough did they sand it before painting? Regardless you'll have to spend some quality time with it and some varying grits of wet sanding paper. Go as rough as necessary to get bad scratches, gouges and discolortion out and then progressively work with finer grits to remove those scratches. Finish up with a 600 or 1000 grit before polishing the plastic. You will need a buffer of some sort and automotive rubbing compound. Compound it to a shine then use a plastic polish with a polishing pad on the buffer to finish it up. Don't always expect them to look new either!

Tore into the 480 engine tonight. The last owner said it had a "small transmission problem". The top end was perfect, brand new piston and a almost perfect bore and the crank and rod look fine. About 90% of the rest of the engine is junk. I might be able to use the pressure plate, the countershaft, the kick start shaft and gear and the clutch cover. The rest is chewed, broken or ground to a fine silver paste. Trans gears, mainshaft, shift forks, shift drum, clutch basket and plates, kickstart idler gear, and both case halves are useless. It appears the last goon ran the trans without oil. There wasn't a drop in it, yet he said he recently rode it. lol

When I took the clutch basket off the mainshaft dropped a 1/2 inch. I could almost get the trans out without splitting the cases because both the mainshaft and countershaft bearing races were broken in half. Must have been a HELL of a crunch!!

I have had some experience with the 82 CR480 and engine rebuilds. When you start rebuilding the engine with your spare, take a very close look at the aluminum between the main and countershaft. The 82's were weak in that area and developed cracks in the very area where yours grenaded. In your first photo where the bearing race blew out you can see an almost straight line from the countershaft to the main shaft. That is where they crack. When I pulled my project engine down to replace the bearings it was cracked and separated at that point. I bought a used set of cases to replace and sure enough that set had a crack as well. I took that set to a certified welder (and engine builder) and he repaired it for me. Luckily it was before it started separating and the bearing pockets were still the proper size.

The spare engine is apart and it dosen't appear to have any cracking. These cases actually look extremely good. I'm wondering if I should have it welded up anyway as a preventative measure? What do you guys think?

Is it a 82 or 83 Terry? Either one is a cool bike. I'm glad you got it. Are you scheming on any vintage mx or is it a ice bike?
I can give you the email of some dude in the Philipeans that will make you a seat cover for 30 dollars. if he doesn't have th pattern yet, you send him your old cover and he will copy it and give it to you for free

It's an 82 four speed. I want to make it look like a 80-81 RC 500 but we'll see. Either way it will probably end up as a ice bike. I also found a 79 250 that I may steal the nice aluminum tank from for the 480, orrrrr.......the 480 may get shoehorned into the 250 chassis. Tongue Saw this done before and it looks way cool.

I'll keep the seat cover guy in mind. Thanks!

Holy Smokes! That's like saying Mount Everest "is a little tough to climb".

Looking forward to the progress.
