what was that bike like back in the day? I am thinking of getting back into vintage racing. I did it for a few years on a 81 YZ 465 and had a blast. Unadilla is having that vintage weekend in a few weeks and I am thinking of picking up a bike and going. Would this be a good choice and what's a good price? I found another '81 465 as well for less and in solid condition.

There is no comparing the 82 and 83...the 83 was a porshe compared to the 82 volkswagen.

Great power, stone reliable, decent suspension, good handling......and a blast to ride.

I raced mine until '89 and wish I had never sold it.

GREAT Power. no brakes. Not even a hint. In fact if you exhaled while stopping it would provide more stopping power than the brakes on that bike.

Other than that. Its a beautiful bike.

83 was a great year for the CR250 also.

Never rode one. Heard they have light switch power bands..purple color..

Just built my maico 490 mega 2... Awesome power when the rear wheel hooks up...but it is smooth power coming on the throttle.

Brakes are decent also

I highly recommend getting one.!

I still have a '83 480.

I have owned and raced the '81 Maico 490 as well as the '83 CR 480.

Although they are technically in different classes as far as vintage racing goes, I preferred the CR 480 over the Maico.

I know that this is blasphemy in some circles, and I absolutly love Maicos, but the CR is just an awesome bike.

The absolute meanest holeshots I've ever ripped in over 30 years of racing were on the CR.

Oddly enough, despite being nearly 30 years old, that bike for some reason has remained surprisingly "modern".
Despite the poor brakes as was already mentioned (who needs brakes when you are roosting everyone?), I stil occasionally throw it in the trailer on practice days and quickly adapt to it.
I don't usually like to boast, but I've let some of the younger ones out there get a face of CR 480 roost just to give them a literal taste of the good old days!

Can't go wrong with a 1983 CR480R. I own one that's been in my family 20 years. You can ride that thing forever and not touch it. And for an open bike, its actually easy to start.

I had an 83 CR480 in high school. Rode around the desert and some tracks with it. Awesome bike! Sold it in 01. I should have never let it go. It looked every bit as good as the one in that ad too! I kick myself every day for selling it.
