So I got a 1976 xl175 a few days ago from the workshop at my school. When I got it the carb was apart and the key and battery were missing. Me and my Dad put the carb back together and threw it on. then we managed to use a screw driver as an ignition key (because i never found the actuall key). So i kicked it a couple times and nothing happend, so we tested the plug on the cylinder for a spark and there wasn't one, so I put a new plug in but still nothing. All the electricals appear to be hooked up except for two cut wires wraped around the crossbar wich im guessing are for the killswitch because there isnt one on there. Does anybody know what could possibly be going on? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

It won't spark if the kill switch wires are grounded to the handlebar. Tape those up or unplug them and try kicikng again.

Points or CDI? Better hope it's points . If so , a quick cleaning and adjustment may get you some fire.

some of the older bikes had to have a good battery to send the juice to make the spark. And I suspect it has points.

I don't have a battery yet, somebody told me i should'nt need a battery if it has a kickstart, but maybe it actually does need the battery?
