AMA Racing suspends motocross rider Jason Lawrence

PICKERINGTON, Ohio--The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) announced today that it has suspended professional motocross rider Jason Lawrence for unacceptable behavior detrimental to the sport. According to AMA officials, Lawrence was arrested for disorderly conduct at Red Bud Track & Trail on July 4 while in Buchanan, Michigan, for round six of the AMA Toyota Motocross Series Presented by FMF. The incident follows a penalty and suspended fine issued in June for conduct detrimental to the sport at the Freestone County Raceway during round three of the series in Wortham, Texas.

"Mr. Lawrence is suspended indefinitely," said AMA Director of Motocross/Supercross/ATV Ryan Holliday. "In addition, the $25,000 fine that was issued after the June incident and suspended contingent upon the successful completion of a one-year probation will now be imposed." Holliday added that the AMA would not reconsider Lawrence's status until the conclusion of the 2008 season.

Lawrence was notified of the suspension at the race on July 5.

Just my .02, but if they don't reconsider his status until the conclusion of the '08 season, it's going to make it a lot harder for Jason to sign an '09 deal...unless it's in Europe.

He was a multiple time IDIOT. He had his many chances and blew it. I think the penalty is fitting.

If he puts his head down and goes at it, they may have created a monster. It could make things interesting. Which ever way it goes, it will be sliced , diced and discussed until it is sickening.

I think the penalty is fine, any longer and you get into a messy situation where you're denying a guy the right to work and make a living.

Even when he comes back for '09 SX, you know he'll be on a short list. If this penalty doesn't work, nothing will. He'll pull it together and go fast, you watch.

A disorderly conduct is like a traffic ticket, but the AMA is the boss and they had to punish him. Hopefully he'll learn his lesson now and realize he's a professional with a lot of responsibilities.

Hmm, I think the penalty is fine if they would have made it clear that he can return for the 2009 season, on probation of course, if he stays trouble free. The term "indefinitely" is a little overkill.

Good example to set. Maybe this will remain a "professional" sport. And BTW, I like JLaw. I don't think we need to see this sport go the way of all the stick and ball sports, with the gangsta wanna-be's though.

Steve, if he does not have a valid AMA license, he may not be able to compete in FIM competition because he's not properly licensed

So is he in for X-Games or not?

Reading between the lines, sounds like if he straightens out, he will be back for 09 sx.

Penalty is deserved. Up to him now to come back better.

I really like the rumor of him and Reed being on the same team, riding anything black. Two number 1 plates, two guys who people love to hate, this is a marketing firms wet dream.

You hope for his sake it gets sorted out and doesn't end up on Anthony Gobert's path.

So now that he has paid the fine is he off probation?

And if he is off until the open then that is just the right amount of time to get your ass in gear and dominate the up coming year.

No, thats why I'm asking. Would the AMA see it as disrespecting them if he were to compete?

The GayMA strikes again...jeez that's a pretty steep punishment. Whatever, just more time to prepare. So it looks like Jason will have to start his own team in time to win the X Games (and solid chunk of change) and win the US Open (another 300k) both require no AMA license. No problem...then if he still has problems getting a license, he could wait till the East starts. No troubles, bubbles.

Not that you care, but DMG is not the owners yet (starts 2009) and they've agreed to license MX to MX Sports (Coombs)

So, no DMG in MX

He really fu**ed up. He really needed this wake up call. Look how many other rider's try and do good put the effort in to it (Sean Hamblin, Jeff Alessi, Cody Cooper) and they don't go out drinking and shit. And if they do they don't make a scene of it. This kid got out of control i hope they reconsider at the end of the year 2008 and not the end of the season. Even less time for this ungreatful kid to put something together...... He's a champion for god sakes and he pulls this crap....WOW
