So my son is on a klx110l and i want to know which bike he will be ready for next. I was thinking to get a him a new bike for christmas. I know it is ages away but wanted to get an idea. He is nearly 14 and is just over 5 foot. I was thinking either a kx100 for trail riding which he likes doing with his mates and going exploring down the river and stuff or the yz125 because there is a bit more power. Is a kx100 hard to spec up and get performance parts for though. What do you guys think? Also he mainly rides with his mates but also goes to motocross track if we go.

if he is just only 5 foot he will struggle on a 125, the KX100 is a big bored KX85 big wheel

it will depend on how confident he is,

If he's not motocrossing, get him a TTR125l or CRF150f. The CRF is heavy but more reliable. Those bikes will be much easier for him to ride and adapt to than a 2 stroke race bike.

I am 5'4...been riding dirt bikes or 35 years. All my riding buddies laughed at me when I bought a used KX100....The bike fits me perfectly, is an absolute blast to ride and I can literally pick the bike up to put it on the trailer. So light, so flickable, such a screamer and a blast to ride............Oh yea, and all those a-hole freinds who laughed at me........They ALL have asked on multiple occasions to blast around the track for a few laps on the little kawi.

Words to remember for us mere mortals---------> It is more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow

If you have ridden for any length of time you know exactly what I mean.

Your going through what every other person goes through at the at age. So your not alone. My parents are both short so I had no hope. At age 15 at 5' I went from an 80 to CR125, I was an aggressive rider so it was no big deal to me, just had to learn to get off and on the bike and find a place to lean the bike on when starting it. But going from a KLX110 to a 125 may be a big jump, so if you are willing to spend the money and understand that you may only keep the bike for a year or 2 I would go with the kx100, then upgrade to a 125. There is little power difference between the two bikes, but a bigger bike will be easier. I will tell you that there is NO reason to modify a 100 for more power, they are fast enough and if all he has ever ridden was a whimpy 110, this is going to a big jump in power.
