I'm so tired of the PC crap, calling a pot "black" is not racist, especially if it is the kettle doing it...
they have an established history of referring to each other as such...

Man. I was going to question whether Reed was a rider or a doctor until I saw this picture. Glad to see it's the latter. That's great.

I do not remember anyone questioning david bailey's qualifications when he pushed the leatt in the orginal video that pushed us into the neck brace era

Reeds opinion is just as valid , but you need to make up your own mind on weather you where one

My brother thinks that the Leatt causes whiplash, normally when you hit and roll, he thinks the lack of movement would cause your brain to slam against your skull, so he doesn't wear one. He makes a good point but if I go head first I think either way I'm screwed

no ones saying its supposed to prevent head injuries, but Chad was saying instead of your neck taking the slam or force, kids ( which you have to admit there has been a few more head related deaths in our sport since the Leatt craze) heads have been the main impact, because the leatt imobilizes your neck. Ive taken some gnarly wrecks OTB where i slammed head first wearing a leatt so idk if it helped or not...
I was wearing a leatt brace, and got bucked over the bars, and landed head first and broke my neck and back, but im not paralzed, i was close to being parazyled. I think it helped me in the best possible for the situation.

Glad your going to be okay WIlly.

On the helmet side of this discussion the Motorcyclist magazine article from 2005 or so on helmet quality was really good. It made the argument that price and effectiveness in helmet design were not related. This gets posted about every time this comes up, but I figured why not do it again. Here is a link to a chat room where the guy posts the article cut and past style, I couldn't find it otherwise. Shoei and Arai performed poorly in their testing.

With all of the rush to new technology and using it to make helmets lighter in both motorsports and other sports has anyone done a study of the effect of lightening up the helmet? I mean physics would imply mass x's acceleration equals force. If the helmet is significantly lighter would it not start in motion faster and attain a higher speed negating the loss of mass. The helmet moving faster coming to a stop the brain also would be traveling at the same speed. The brain weighs the same and if it is traveling faster wouldn't it hit the skull with more force? I am not talking about the helmet and head as being a static oblect I am including the movement of the neck as well.

Took a really bad-fast crash in Baja...

The Fox helemt DID it's job.

So did my Leatt.

I mention FLY helmets due to the fact that they are LIGHT and have a very high Carbon content (Formule MX helmet) and an EXCELLENT liner.
I broke my neck and back with a leatt brace on so i dont know about them

Went over the bars a few years ago. Landed on my forehead. Drove my chin into my leatte brace which cracked my sternum. That shit fucking hurt for a long time and I couldn't lay down for two weeks. I think I would have been ok without it on. Some guys who saw it said I might of broke my neck without it. Who knows. I still wear mine. Ill take dead over paralyzed. But that's just me.

Hey Willy, i have been posting some PR's about ya recently, hope you are doing good bud!
(but to be totally honest, i post sooo many PR's i dont take the time to read all of them)

I am also part of the unfortunate SCI club, but from way before the Leatt was created lol

Hope you are doing well and on your way to a speedy recovery!

Seen too many crashes with guys wearing neck braces and believe that they totally are necessary. Crashed hard in Baja wearing an AGV and went to sleep for a month or so. Wore Arai all the way up to that time and always wondered if I would have gone into a coma with an Arai on instead of the AGV.

Its all speculation, but it could have kept your head from moving far enough to cause some damage to your spinal cord? Anyway you look at it, count your blessings man, i dont wish this hell on anyone!

But there isn't any proof otherwise either so the damn thing might work for all we know! I'll keep wearing mine until then.

i know how u feel i was wearing my leatt and crashed last nov, i went over bars landed on back of head and fractured my c6 c7 .i was lucky and can only hope that the leatt saved me from further injury..... but i will never know.im back riding and still wear my brace.

He thinks riders can't "tuck and roll", meaning one's head then becomes a shovel rather than a ball which can roll through a crash.

Another part of the theory is that a brace can push a helmet off the top of your head. When you crash, your head then hits the inside of the helmet with more force.

Put them together and it can be bad.

Can anyone post that pic of him "tucking and rolling" like John Travolta at Millville? RC is the only guy I can say I ever saw actually tuck and roll but that seems to be a function of his body shape, 5 ft tall x 5 ft wide and all muscle (at the time). Most "rag doll" which is a far cry from "tucking and rolling". I can agree that a neck brace changes the dynamics of what happens in a crash. Of those changes, some create a better situation some a worse situation. Unfortunately, every circumstance can't be accounted for every time and that is what people seem to want. Not crashing is the only thing that can guarantee complete safety.

This theory that the helmet is pushed up off the head by the brace only tells me it is an ill-fitting helmet or improperly fastened chin strap. Anyone ever seen this?: I have raced with people that left the chin strap loose enough to slip the helmet off without unbuckling.....not at all the proper way to go. If the brace is going to push the helmet around enough to matter, the forces of the helmet hitting the ground are going to push it around as well......and probably much more significantly. Hey, it does all come down to personal choice I guess.
How about Stewart last year at Daytona? Reed during his last crash?

So are the other neck braces being included in these arguments or is it just the Leatt everyone is worried about?

I believe that no matter what if you wreck hard enough or even just tip over, if its your time to break your neck its your time. and there is nothing you can do about it, I have seen people with nasty wrecks with them be fine and I have seen people with out them be fine its all about the way you land and they way your body takes the impact its different every time. I personally wear one because I feel that it helps just that much more. I know i can still break my neck, its motocross people still break their ankles with the best boots, in this sport nothing helps you 100% and thats why we love it. At least thats what gets my heart racing before the gate drops

You should be concerned about the force of your head stopping when it hits something. In that case F=MA and more mass equals a higher force of impact, so the lighter the helmet the better. Acceleration in this case is from x velocity to zero when you hit something.
