I am not sure when is the right time to bring the safety issue to the forefront. I am not involved in the local racing scene. I have been attending practice days ffor the last 25 years in Southern California so I have been to the tracks and I have attended a few races the last few years. I am suprised at the amount of flaggers and the lack of an onsite EMT.
I raced at Corona Raceway from '80-'83. Corona Raceway had races (auto,mx,flat track) over 100 times per year so they were in the unique position to own a couple of old ambulances. These ambulances were staffed with EMT's and if both ambulances were transporting someone WE WAITED FOR ONE TO RETURN before the races resumed! To be honest I cannot remember the frequency of flaggers but we did not have as many jumps as tracks do now.
I did my racing as an adult, 20 years old when I started. A few times during those years I brought to the attention of the promoter- Ron Crandall (rip)- about what I thought was an unsafe condition, wether it was a chunk of concrete that was disced up and left at the side of the track or a pole that needed a straw bale. EVERYTIME Ron took care of it before the next race (that evening) started.
One of the early Day in the Dirt races had a similar tradegy, Brett Downey (rip), etc. Many tracks posted Brett Downey Foundation information and signage early on but at many tracks that is no longer true. A race with 50 entries is FAR different from a race that has 300 enteries or something like DITD, 1,000 or more?. Not only entry fee's but track side sponsership as well. Do you think all that signage (Redbull) is free? It is time for racers to demand as safe as conditions possible and for the promoters ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT HAVE BEEN AROUND THE INDUSTRY FOR 30-50 YEARS TO STEP UP. Maybe the wheels are already in motion for more flaggers and some training. I sure hope so.
