Guys, I had a good email conversation with the chairman of that OHV commission this morning. It really opened my eyes to the ridiculous amount of legal BS that a municipality has to wade through in order to get anything done. In short, they have to front a ton of money and then hope that some eco-organization doesn't shut them down, even though the money is already spent. It's pretty tough and in the commissioner's opinion, it will never happen in the DeAnza area. (He's a moto head, by the way, and would love nothing more.)

The commissioner did mention that emails, petitions and phone calls are great, but that attendance in-person at the semi-monthly commission meetings would go a long way. I asked him for a schedule and he said he'll get it to me. (It is also posted on the website, according to him.) I'll post that up when I see it.
He thinks we might do better by opening another park in a different location so we can prove that there will be attendance and a need. Personally, I'm all for more riding areas, no matter where they are.
Thanks Falcon, keep us updated! I really think the best thing we can do is show them there is tons of support for something like this. Everybody just wants more places to ride.

Beaumont has been one of my favorite places to ride since the mid '70s.

There is one legal riding area left in Riverside County, but it doesn't come close to matching Beaumont for size and fun.

I don't know how much of the original area can be re-opened, since Shea Homes owns a big chunk of the Jackrabbit Trail side, and some other developer bought a big chunk of the Gilman Springs side, but all the best riding is in between anyway.

If this happens, I'll be one of the first riders out there.

I hope none of you young whippersnappers gets too pissed if you get stuck behind me on the single track. Wink

By the way, the commissioner told me that off-road riding is NOT illegal in Riverside county, like many signs and naysayers would have you believe. Quote:
" There are signs posted and rumors about Riverside County NOT allowing OHV riding but it is not correct. Some folks want to make residents think that all OHV riding in the open is not allowed. "

I only know of one official spot, and it's half way between you and me, off the 15 fwy.

Wanna go trail riding?

Those are both near Ocotillo, right?

McCains valley exit off I-8 at Boulevard and follow the signs. Its before you drop down the grade to the town of Ocotillo. Lake Morena is a couple miles east of Pine Valley off of the 8. I rode out in Beaumont in the late 8Os, hell of a fun spot.

I sent emails to the editors of all the major moto magazines soliciting their help. I'd really like to see us get at least 1000 signatures.

Oh man I would love Beaumont to be legal. I don't go out there with my friends because it is illegal.

I will come to some of the commission meetings if they don't fall on my nights at school. We should also offer our support of the riding area with matters like weekly trash pickup days, trail maintainance, trail mapping, and trail signage. These are small things that we as riders can do and take care of because we want the area clean, rideable, and most of all safe.

I signed

OK guys, here's the info. I'm going to forward this to as many people as I can, and I suggest you do the same. Let's show up en masse at all these meetings and make sure they know there is a constituent group that cares about riding areas!

Commissioner's words:
"OK here is the schedule. 3rd Wed quarterly. All meetings at 630PM at the Parks Headquarters at 4600 Crestmore road, Riverside. A really cool site that was a 300 acre farm along the Santa Ana river. Old big farmhouse with newer buildings they expanded in to. Crestmore is left turn along the riverbed, North over the foothills on Mission from downtown Riverside.
Any questions can be handled by the sec Rebecca. 951 955 4306. Bring friends and OHV business leaders.

So beaumont has been a killer riding spot for 30+ years? Without the help of the government?

Alright, we have made great progress, over 300 signatures! But we have stalled out a bit since the bump we got from MXA. Hopefully more mags will step up to the plate and support this cause! Get the word out!!!!!
