Keihin jets based off a different scale I assue? right now I have a 400 main and 37.5 pilot. stock needle. How do I plug the power jet?
What about gearing? I feel that may be a problem too. I had 13/51 which was better when the motor was stock but with the porting its just crazy how hard the mid range is. I was thinking going 14/49 if I kept it.
Thanks!
Since Gorr has already worked the head and cylinder, I would suggest getting a '00-up YZ carb asap, and installing the jetting I mentioned earlier. The jets between Mikuni and Keihin are totally different. Plugging the powerjet is simple. Either use a threaded brass plug from the hardware store, or plug the hole with an epoxy like JB Weld. The YZ carb makes an even more low/mid power than milling the cylinder. I found a '00 YZ carb on ebay for $67 and it completely changed the character of the bike. It now has nice smooth power delivery from bottom to top. I believe that the 05-07 CR250's would have won all the shoot-outs if it came with a Keihin PWK.
BTW, I'm running stock gearing and it works perfectly with the YZ carb and milled base.
Thanks again

The R1368EKA needle works well with the #7 slide and 50 pilot that the '00-up YZ carb already has. Swap the main for a 180 and you should be set.
If you want even more low/mid power and would prefer to use a new carb, a good option is the 36mm PWK used on the '06-up KTM 250SX, part no. 54831001544. You can buy a new one for $270
I had been looking for some time, and found a really nice '05 a couple of years ago, awesome bike. I added braided stainless brake lines, oversized front rotor and VForce reeds. The tuning/powerband is indeed just a skosh off. We worked most of a full day swapping jets and moving the needle, but never saw much improvement. I've been planning to send to the top end to Eric Gorr, but just haven't done it yet.
CamP, thanks for your recommendations, I may just go that route myself
Most of the YZ250 carbs on ebay come from roached out bikes that are being parted out by some chop-shop that didn't personally own the bike and never rode it. You have to be really careful because half of them won't even clean the damn thing for the pictures, they almost never take pics of the inside of the carb, and all they say is "came off a clean bike!"
This is important because the newer YZ carbs are particularly prone to a few things. First is the float needle seat is pressed in and Yamaha does not sell a replacement seat. So lots of them have worn or sticking seats. Second is the O-rings under the "jet-block" in the float bowl. They go bad when the bike sits and, again, are not sold except by some obscure aftermarket places. The bike will run like shit if these are bad and the only way to know is to bolt it on and try. 3rd, the starter jet pipe has a hair-thin hole and gets clogged very easily with corrosion. Again, won't know until you try it on the bike.
Also, not all 2000-2012 YZ250 carbs are the same. If you look through the part numbers they have changed over the years. The biggest change I am aware of is the orientation of the TPS wire on the top/rear of the carb. On the earlier steel framed bikes the wire goes up. On the newer aluminum framed bikes it goes down to give clearance to the frame. It sounds like you've put one of the older upright ones on your bike and it cleared the frame no prob. Question: can you rotate the top of the carb towards the left side of the bike to swap needles without removing the carb? with the 2001 carb on my 2006 YZ250 I can not.
I probably did get lucky with the '$67 used carb. I figured that at that price, it was disposable if it turned out to be junk. If you have a 04-up CR and want a new 75mm PWK, the '06-up 250SX carb can be purchased for $270 online.
'02-03 CR owners can get a new 91mm long PWK for the '00 CR250 for $157 online.
