In a 458 Ferrari .... not too bad of a ride to run your first endurance race in.

Stars and Stripes livery #56 ....

Anaheim 1 is great for us motoheads but this signals the start of auto racing in the United States.

It's a great day! !

Travis will run as driver #4 for Waltrip.

Cool thanks! I was also kind of amused to see that AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson is also racing! I had no idea he was racing cars.

Ok, so 24 hours worth of cars going round and round a near oval track I can get live. But no Supercross? Are these guys for real?

Not cool seeing Pastrana next to #56 or in 21st either..

As boring as it may sound to us moto-heads, car racing is way bigger than moto. I just witnessed Brian Deegan compete in his first monster jam event and he had the biggest cheers in the stadium. He went as big as any of the regular drivers and did awesome.

I know this. Chase field had more people at monster jam tonight than sx two weeks ago. The fan base in auto racing/sports is what I'm referring to.

sure it is popular but so is every tedious stick and ball sport. These crossover guys will be dreaming of their moto days for the rest of their lives, the car shit is just fill in crap to keep them busy when they are no longer competitive on the bike. I have much more respect and admiration for a moto guy who goes off road racing when his moto career is over, a guy like Mike Brown or Rodney Smith. These other guys with the nascar racing, truck racing, etc are just attention whores and off road racing is not a big enough spectacle- it is for true enthusiasts, not, as I said, attention whores. my .02

Attention whores? Seriously?

Lets just say you've lived your entire life around moto. You were four years old when you started racing and that competitive spirit has been in your blood since the start. You put 100% of your efforts towards training and racing and it all you know for 20-30 years. Finally, injuries, wear and tear on your body and responsibilities to your new family dictate that maybe it's time to hang it up. You've made enough money that you never have to work again so you're all set to retire and enjoy life. All of a sudden you're whole world changes. No early morning training sessions, no testing sessions, no dealership appearances, no team meetings, no photo shoots, it's all done. You don't know what to do with yourself because all that plus the pure adrenalin rush of racing, is all you know.

It's not like you are 65 years old and just want to sit back and enjoy being retired from the same job you hated for 40 years. You still love racing and you are young and fit, but there is such a big risk of suffering a life changing injury that you just can't go back to racing mx because your family needs you, so you decide to go car racing. It satisfies the need for speed, is a whole lot safer and it's fun as hell.

So tell me oh wise one, just what the hell is wrong with that, and how does this make someone an attention whore? If you actually race (doubt it) and did it all your life, just for fun mind you, could you actually just walk away from it and never race ANYTHING again? I know I couldn't do it. I stopper racing MX in my late 20s, but Ive ridden and raced other disciplines ever since and I'm 50 now.

Excuse me now, I have a KX500 waiting for me to wring it's neck at 100 mph on an ice track.

Good post TK, Its all motorsports to me, if it has gas, an engine with a checkered flag, it cannot be replaced for most of us.

They led for 27 laps and then an axle broke during the night I think so they lost loads of time fixing it.

Back in 9th and 15 laps down now, but the car is still going well and there's enough time left for anything to happen.

Your scenario seems to reenforce my point that these guys are addicted to the limelight and will do whatever to stay in it, even racing around in circles in a car. Having earned enough money to do anything they want for the rest of their lives, I say most anyone who is motivated by a love of bikes and riding would certainly busy themselves with bikes and riding, shockingly. Someone who has climbed the ladder, been a pampered moto star and then drops it to climb some other motorsports ladder is pretty much in it for the limelight, that is how I see it. I am not really saying that these guys should not do whatever they feel like doing, I am just always disappointed when they dont get into some other form of moto competition rather than racing cars, which has to be the most tedious form of motorsports.

user - its not the limelight they pursue, but a different challenge and an inbuilt competitive desire that they need to satisfy.

I wish Pastrana was still racing bikes, it frustrated me when he directed his attention towards fmx but since then you realise the guy just wants to try his hand at all sorts of different things. Its his life and he can live it however he wishes. A bit of a showman maybe, but I don't see him as an attention whore at all. He's just passionate about motorsport.

Racing is racing. Whining is whining.
