Its a budget problem, small depts do not have the money, but only need a few, larger depts need a large number of devices. Always has been a we need it when its to late. Example when the ohio problem when the zoo animals got released and police had to kill quite a few. People just said wound them, tase them, police have a half a second to make a decision and sometimes not enough time to wait for a taser or web! Pepper spray, taser are usually carried on larger depts, then you have to pay for the equipment and training the officers, its not that simple. Money always was a issue for spending on police depts.fire depts, teachers etc! Well at least Tom Brady gets 10 million a year, lol, call him when you need some help, see how that works out.

Many patrol officers carry tazers now..but tazer, pepper spray, net shooter, baton, gun...good grief. Not sure how much stuff can go on that belt.

My personal opinion is that gun vs any weapon is simple, effective, doesn't bog the officers down in endless decision loops, and allows for departmental policies that make their lives easier in civil court when it happens. They can't just mow down anything that twitches. Even federal deadly force policy, as liberal as it is in comparison to most state/local policies, doesn't say you can shoot anything that twitches.

Considering it is possible to kill a person with a single well landed punch, I don't think it is wise or fair to try and do these incremental scales of force. Once a cop is down...then all of his weapons are up for grabs. Compliance shouldn't be optional, negotiated, or take the feelings of Canadians into consideration.

Police depts are limited to spending, budgets for each year. Unless they get a grant. Its not that simple and like the above stated, you can only carry so much stuff on your belt and in your cruiser.

If the technology existed that would eliminate the tazer, baton, net shooter, pepper spray and combine them all into one compact easily handled gizmo..I agree 100%. The Star Trek stun phazer comes to mind. Cops wouldn't even need guns at that point.

Until that time, a gun is going to be the primary response to a weapon...too many incidents to count that support this policy.

Well, how many times would you have to get hit with the pipe to kill you. I can tell you that one good hit could kill the officer. What about stabbed with it. Do you think he would only hit you to put a small bump on you, and would he only hit you where it wouldn't hurt as much? If I guy is in the mental state of wielding a pipe against an officer with a gun, what kind decision is he making? He has crossed a mental and irrevokable barrier where he knows the risk.

What about an inmate climbing over the fence of a prison? At what point to you try and council this person. Again, he has made a decision, knowing full well of the risk.

I agree on the human life thing, but bottom line money rules the world. Police depts do research on improving techniques, any ideas will be accepted and used if practical and affordable, Guess society is messed up, maybe the spoiled athletes movie stars can donate some money LMFAO.

While I was out in Phoenix about a year ago, the Tempe Police Department laid off 100 officers. 100 officers!
