I saw where Susan Atkins has asked for a compassionate release from prison because she has cancer. Part of me says yeah, society should have compassion. Then part of me remembers how she told Sharon Tate she had no compassion for her....she surely didn't show any compassion for any of the other victims, nor their families, with her antics at trial. So I'm inclined to think she can die incarcerated just as she was originally sentenced.

Should she be released?

Say "oh you have cancer? We'll just kill you with a scalpal to the heart that way you won't suffer."

and get it over with. Let her know the fear of death in her lifetime, the way you can only feel it right before you die a terrible death.

Bugleosi said he don't care, but I'm sure the Tate family has a few things to say about it.

She was saying that she's no longer the same person she was then. And I believe her. Unfortunately for her she is serving a sentance she recieved when she was "that other person" and that sentance hasnt been carried out. Dont do the crime if you cant do the time.

I agree. Too bad Sharon Tate her guest and the LaBiancas didnt live in Texas.

You guys ever see "Helter Skelter"? That actor Steve Railsback? I think that was the actors name that played Manson. The actor did a great job of being a wacked out scary freak.

I got an idea....install a ceiling mounted hook and a pre-tied noose in prison cells.

If they want out, they get out. Otherwise, they can do the time.

I've seen interviews of Atkins and Leslie van Houten where they go on about how they are different people than when they murdered. But I don't quite get the disconnect - how could they have been so utterly depraved? LSD doesn't make you homicidal. They weren't defending themselves.

Sure, they're sorry they got caught and spent decades in prison as model prisoners. But the depraved murderer still lives inside them it seems to me.

Don't want to leave out Tex, he was equally or more the homicidal lunatic.

While I don't think she should be released, I can sympathize.
I was a different person 16 yrs ago, not murderous, but really damn stupid and I could've easily killed someone by accident.
I honestly believe she was a different person all those years ago, back when I was just a kid, because I was a totally different person only 16 yrs ago.

Yeah, I agree about being different. Me too. But the savagely murderous part of what Atkins did is what confuses me. It is hard to understand how someone can do that, how acts like that could be inside a person. Kinda like a Dahmer or a Bundy, but she is remorseful, coherent, and seemingly sane now.

But she did it. Therefore do the time. I just really want to know what would be cheaper for the state? The Prison system is all F'ed up, like any other civil servant run enterprise.

With a terminal illness I think it's clear it would be cheaper for the State to release her than to provide medical care.

If they released her what would the states liability be, where would she be released? Any liability to protect her, etc? Lawsuits from families of victims also. In this case does the state have to provide reasonable care or will they have to go out of their way with specialists, tests ... ? Just wondering. I still like my idea of putting her way out in Death Valley and not telling anyone. And Geezers suggestion would work also.

I think the death penalty is the easy way out.

Forcing someone to live in prison to their death is much more punishment.
