I haven't been to Canada but I hear its beautiful and there are lots of good tracks..not sure if there is any national calber tracks but why doesnt the AMA race races up there as part of the American series??

The MLB has Canadian teams and the NHL leagues have Canadian teams...

I mean, let's be serious here..the way the schedule is routed now, it wouldn't make any less sense to run a round or two in Canada, right?

Very cool idea and an exciting prospect. I race the Nationals up here however and sadly we do not have a facility that could accomadate a US national. Ive been to Washougal, Glen helen, Pala to compare. A couple tracks up here could be turned into US level with some work. We lack the size of any venue to hold such a large event however. Even if it was a small turn out (say 15 000?) would be too crowded.

I wish tho!

That a great idea but...

Stallyballs doesn't want to share power and control of our Candain Nationals, without a fight.

Partially true. Mark Stallybrass would stand no chance even if he wanted to, and trust me, I'm betting that if he could get an AMA Nat here he would jump on it. Money makes the world go round' for Stally.

When I was promoting in Ontario I was also a CMRC District director I inquired to the AMA as to what were the obstacles in the way of holding an AMA national in Canada. Pretty simple: FIM. The CMA is the Canadian FIM affiliate, just as the AMA is in the US. Now if the CMA REALLY wanted to I imagine they could lobby for an AMA national or two, but they are just not a large enough organization to do the deal. I would bet that the FIM would be very reluctant to have the CMA attempt this as they (the FIM) could end up looking very bad.

Add to this that the CMRC is the powerhouse in MX in Canada and I'm sure Stally would do everything in his power to block such an event (unless it was his), and if it did happen he would find a way to hurt any CMRC rider that dared to race the rival race.

Gopher Dunes is the hardest and roughest sand track in North America, (the sand has no bottom like the 'Wick.)
The track operation is the best in Canada, the track is halfway between Detroit and Toronto.

Our Nationals have US TV exposure, so a pro coming up here that can ride sand will do well.

I agree with everything you say but Gopher Dunes is nowhere close to being a us national caliber track. Its a great track but would need to be way longer plus all the parking and space that is required.

I think that the possiblility of having a national in Canada is zero and if there was, the southeast us mx fans would have a riot.

No offense to my Canadian buds, but with all the bitchen Nationals in the lower 48, I would not get a passport to get into Canada (or Mexico).
Cool

Hando, it sounds like Pala is out, so you'll have to target another track. Besides, I think Davey is trying very hard to make the Southeast happen. It clearly takes a lot of time and effort to identify a track and have the owners put in the necessary capitol to make it worthy. And that's not including the politics already mentioned.

Ha! Spoken like a true Canadian. I do wish MN was more like Canada in some ways. Hopefully you guys get yourself a round of the (inter?)nationals. That way you won't have to skate so far the see one. Tongue

I'd attend an outdoor national in Canada as long as it was within reasonable driving distance.

Love Canada. Just booked my hotel for the Toronto SX. I plan on downing a bunch of Kokanees while I'm there.

We do have facilities that are large enough to accommodate a National, and I agree with you that we do not have a facility developed enough to host a AMA National. I work for a track in Alberta that also hosts a CMRC National, and I can imagine having gone to many, many AMA Nationals and being involved with CMRC Nationals, that the prep work is 100x more then what we do for our CMRC National.

There are also significant costs involved with bringing rigs across the border, and ensuring all the riders have passports too! Many of the current AMA teams find Toronto a headache with all the border-crossing politics involved and I am sure that would continue to be a problem if a Canadian National was incorporated into the series.

The other factor is that I do not think it would make financial sense. Since many of the Canadian tracks that could hold an AMA National are not super close to the border, the costs to bring in the materials needed would exceed any profits.

I seem to end up drinking Sleemans whenever I'm in Ontario, for some reason.

I highly recommend Keiths though - but it has to be Red.

We got seriously into the Kokanee when we landed in BC for a summer job once - the locals made fun of us calling it Tourist Beer. We didn't care.

When home in the local NSLC, I usually go for the Moose. Or Rickards Red - depending on the mood.

Jeez, drink much?

So you work for Castrol or Wildrose? You said you have been to many U.S. nationals? Then you would know that they are both not capable of holding the same amount of people. Infrastructure is just not there.

Castrol would possible chance if they borrowed an adjacent field for more parking/camping. Calgary is cramped for our tiny races even. I hope no one takes me the wrong way, I think we have a pretty good series with a very high skill level (much higher than outsiders realize) but I’m just being realistic when comparing to a US outdoor...
