I have always wondered why about 8 years or so that the FIM got involved with American SX? Is it because we added the Canadian rounds to the series? If so I didn't realize they sanctioned MX in Canada. Is because they inject money into the series and Feld wants them her for that reason? Does it have to do with the manufacturers or is it because we are nice and let them in?

It has annoyed me that when they introduce SX at the start of the broadcast it takes them 2 minutes to rattle off the intro that ends with "....an FIM world championship series" or something like that.

Just curious. But if the FIM doesn't even pay thier own riders I don't see how they can inject dollars into our series. If thats the case I say kick em' to the curb and shorten the damn name of the series.

SX is a FIM World Championship. Not usa only shit. It was a money thing. And it's never going to change.

The round in Canada makes it an international series.maybe?
I think they were in with the guys before Feld, ClearChannel was it?
Maybe it was part of the deal Feld bought and has to honor.

Some say it's lame, I've felt that way, but some say it adds prestige, and I agree.

Let 'em have it, they aren't hurting anybody.

IIRC it had to do with the whole Jam sports debacle quite a few years back.

It resulted from a power struggle between the AMA and promoters. The promoters tried to dump the AMA and went to the FIM as their sanctioning body. The AMA went and got another promoter to try and start their own series. After they all sued each other six ways from Sunday we ended up with both the FIM and AMA and even though the FIM are involved pretty much in name only and Feld actually controls everything.

Since the AMA is under the FIM Umbrella it could never be designated a "world" championship without the FIM as it would be against the way the FIM/AMA/CMA/etc is set-up. The branches handle the national championships in their home country and the FIM has the rights to the world championships.

Why is making it a world championship important? Television for one. It's easier to broadcast in some countries that have limits on foreign content. A world championship race is treated differently than a US national championship race.

I'm pretty sure that the FIM mandates that any world championship that isn't a single race event has to be held in at least two different nations to be eligible as a world championship series. Which explains the Canadian round.

As you say the FIM is the governing body with other Federations running under it to give them "World" status, the AMA Supersport and World Supersport Championship are under the FIM but I don't think the AMA Superbike class is,do you know if the Supersport runs outside the US? It would back your theory up.I think there are Homologation rules that apply too

I don't know about the financial side of things, but I'm pretty sure the idea was to make SX a more global sport. this idea was launched around 2003 when they made 2 supercross rounds in Arnhem and Geneva. Although the international reception was off the charts, I think the promotors felt it was 'too soon' and so they watered it off with some Canadian rounds. I do believe that in the next 20 years at least a couple of rounds will be international in the same way it will happen in other competitions (NBA, NFL,...)

Are you confusing the FIM with Youthstream here?
The FIM does not have riders to pay. Not in Europe and not in the US, they're the sanctioning body. Not the promoter.

Pretty funny. To make sense out of things, we want them to be easy, for the brain to grasp. But often the answer is complex. I think this thread is an perfect example! Smile

I'm not sure its has anything to do with the Supercross series being a World Championship, its more a seal of recognition as having International status. Like Jefro said they're not responsible for paying anyone, they simply govern motorcycle sport all around the world and help provide an official seal of certification of sorts.

You would be correct Jefro.....I did get the FIM and Youthstream mixed up. Thanks for pointing that out.
