Can't remember the year, maybe '78 or '79, at Sears Point Trans AMA his frame snapped at the steering head on the landing of a jump and he did an ugly face plant. I believe that was the last day he wore an open face helmet. Somebody help me with the correct year. I'm sure someone has a pic. Same thing happened to Tony D during a SX during the same time period. Riding a factory Suzuki during that period was apparently a risky proposition back then.

1976 Carnegie, the track on the top of the hill. Last Trans-AM there, then the race (Nor-Cal) moved to Sear Point. I think the triple clamp or the stem snapped. Realy bad... ruptured splean something like that. And yeah thats when the Bell Moto became permanent helmet.

Thanks for the correction, my memory is a little fuzzy. I thought the ruptured spleen deal happened in Europe or South America. I remember being at Gatorback for a Winter AMA series race, which would have been in Jan or Feb, and the referee told everybody at the rider's meeting that The Man had had a bad crash and had serious internal injuries and for everybody to pray for him. Not saying you are wrong at all, I just thought that was a separate incident. I remember seeing pics of the aftermath of the Carnegie crash years ago in MXA or Dirtbike and they looked painful for sure.

Roger D lost his spleen in a crash in Europe if I remember correctly,

the steering stems were failing without warning.

My best memory of Roger D was a Canadian GP at Copetown when they had to extend the track acoss the highway to get enough track lenght to qualify because the track was too short.
