Not that it would ever happen, but I'd like to see both college presidents simply cancel the rest of the year's

schedule and throw the (offending ) punks outta school.

Most of these kids shouldn't have gotten out of high school, and they have no business attending college.

Don't know about Cincinnati, but Xavier's kids graduate at a pretty remarkable rate. Hard to say that most of them have no business attending college when most of them graduate.....

That all depends on how they graduate.

Xavier always has a strong BB team, and I doubt their scouts are looking for road scholars.

That's what happens when you have auto correct.

That would be Rhodes Scholar.

Bullshit. Autocorrect happens with similar letter words, not when you type a completely different word.

I think you mean Rhodes scholars........

90% + graduation rate is pretty good. Far above the average for non-athletes, nationally (around 65%?)

So you are OK with kids attending major colleges for no other reason than for athletics?

What does that mean if you are pushing kids through school so your graduation rate looks better?

Bottom line:

Collegiate Athletics is out of control, and needs a major overhaul.

Probably a common misconception, and certainly one that a few incidents have tainted people's beliefs for sure. But from my experience and from kids I know who are currently student athletes, not very accurate.

I was just typing the "Collegiate" and the word "Coleen" came up.

Now if you have something to say, then say it.

But if you don't like what I have to say, then don't go off on a rant for something that has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

I respectfully disagree. Collegiate Athletics involves money., and as always, money can corrupt even the most sincere and honorable things.

There is no doubt that college athletics involves money. Every business does.

That, however, doesn't make every athlete (or even most) unworthy of an education.

Most athletes I have been around first hand actually work harder and do better than the "average" student. Maybe it's the spirit of competition, I'm not entirely sure.

It's of no surprise that Collegiate Athletics is in the shape it's in today. We have a video of the thug mentality that fills the college athletic programs today, yet people want to argue about it.

Amazing

Just remember, when it's two basketball teams getting into a fight, it's "thug mentality". When a couple of hockey teams go at it, it's playing hard-nosed and enforcing some discipline........

So what you're saying is that hockey is blending into college basketball?

Is this really Karl Rove the spin doctor, here on Vital?

You're much smarter than that.

I have an idea. Why not just say that the collegiate sports are more important to you than the academics of our colleges today.

No, I'm saying that the participants seem to be held to some pretty different standards. Seems a bit odd.......

And I'm not talking much about pro hockey.

It's really simple. College is suppose to be about academics, not sports. You and I both know that this is not the case today.

Bring back the semi pro leagues, and keep our colleges focused on academics.

BTW mxknowitall: I was just typing semi, hit the wrong key and the word Mimi came up. The two words are so similar.

College is still mostly about academics. The research dollars that colleges receive far and away outpace the receipts from athletics, and only a very, very small percentage of students participate in inter-collegiate athletics at all.

None of which really has anything to do with the topic, of course. Originally, a pushing match between rival teams where one player threw a punch becomes a testament that most of the student-athletes aren't worthy of being educated in the first place.

No

It, along with many other things show that the ability of the athlete, over rides whether the student belongs in higher education period.

You're not stupid man. You, as well as others know that you don't have to be academically qualified to attend a major university if you have superior athletic abilities. If you want to argue that point, then you either think that the entertainment value, or the money that can be made, is more important than the ethics of higher education.

Your conclusion about what I think is completely false.

None of what you have said in the last several posts demonstrates that the individuals you originally said weren't worthy of a college education don't deserve to be educated. It's a pretty rough generalization at absolute best.

Most athletes who normally wouldn't qualify for a school under "normal" guidelines qualify under special circumstances just like hundreds of other students at colleges and universities. For athletes at the Univ. of Wash., for example, there are a total of 30 of these admits for all sports combined. That's a bit lower than the overall percentage of the general student population, so it's hard to make the case that athletes get that much more of a break in that area.

Unfortunately, a few cheating scandals seemed to have painted a pretty wide brush and left the idea that all student athletes are just there to play.

Then perhaps you aren't familiar with admissions processes? Most schools ( all that I know of but there might be a few somewhere that don't) have special circumstance admissions programs.
