The Atlantic's Focus section has a gallery of submissions to National Geo's photo contest. There are some cool pics, but this one was a grabber!

Some pictures are better when you read the description. This one is my nightmare fuel.

"An unexpected side-effect of the 2010 flooding in parts of Sindh, Pakistan, was that millions of spiders climbed up into the trees to escape the rising flood waters; because of the scale of the flooding and the fact that the water took so long to recede, many trees became cocooned in spiders webs. People in the area had never seen this phenomenon before, but they also reported that there were less mosquitos than they would have expected, given the amount of standing water that was left. Not being bitten by mosquitoes was one small blessing for people that had lost everything in the floods. (© Russell Watkins) "

The first one doesn't look real. Not saying it isn't, but there are no clouds except for the tornadic one. I'd say it is more than rare to have that clear of a sky around a storm that could spawn such a twister.
There are usually really high columns above such a storm as well.

What a strange photo and a nightmare indeed.

Anybody else here have nightmares about bugs? Spiders and such crawling on the ceiling of your bedroom, falling off onto your bed till you are covered in creepy crawley bugs? Its my recurring nightmare. In real life i have no problems with any bugs/ spiders etc, but they haunt my sleep sometimes.

It's a volcanic eruption. The lighting is from the static with the ash and turbulence driven into the air.

Well my dumbass stands corrected then.
Living in tornado ally, that's what I saw, a trailer killer.

Holt crap. One late night I turn on the light and start to shuffle through the sheets, my wife asks "What are you doing?" " I thought I felt something" I said. She LEAPED out of bed. WHAT?! Never saw her move so fast..........

One could get lost for days at the NASA site that has their still and video stuff. The people who put together the video above did a great job.
