Considering a relocation for work. What's it like in Irvine and the surrounding area as far as housing, shopping, night life etc.?

What are 2 bedroom homes going for? And the neighborhoods those houses are in. Any areas to avoid? Are there any cites or suburbs of Irvine within a 15 minute drive that may offer better living?

I've tried doing research online but figured I would post here since alot of members probably are knowledgable about that area.

Which MX tracks are closest to the Irvine area?

Nice place, a favorite business destination for me.

Kawi USA is near Irvince, Lake Forest? fyi.

Shopping will not be an issue - South Coast Plaza and Fashion Island are huge retail areas.

Be aware you are in SoCal so housing will be very pricey...and the 405 and 5 are heavily trafficed.

I work in Irvine ! Cheap living on the ocean ?? San Clemente and it's small town and beautiful. All beach city bars are fun, stay away from Newport, all cops there are assholes and if any of you post here ?? I'd tell you that to your face. Oh tracks Milestone & Lake Elsinore.

What's your average commute time to work?

I've lived in smaller town most of my life so i'm thinking that may be the way to go. Large city life has always seemed overwhelming to me and not an ideal place to live.

I will check on the info you gave me and other surrounding areas. Thanks!

average commute to work is definitely long-er, always traffic. but it is the California beach area, IMO the best place on earth. good luck with the move, I'm jealous!

Ok I have lived in a small town, Running Springs, CA population 3500 haha Orange County, South OC is not a big city, yes a lot of people live here but it is spread out, not like NY or Miami or Downtown LA. OC is lots of green trees, hills, mountains, shrubs etc. I live 17 miles one way from work, I won't lie it takes me 35-40 mins to get to work cause of traffic, so I take the 73 toll road to work in the morning, takes me 20 mins then and going home I take side streets to the 405/I-5 Y and it takes me 40 mins to get home. Or you can take PCH, its the 45 min route but it's a beautiful drive. I love the OC it's a nice place to live. oh and we have like 10 high rises in OC that are 20 stories or less, so great views.

CA sucks! Don't move here. State is broke, CA government is horrible, traffic is horrendous at some times, it's expensive, very expensive. That being said....

I live in OC and work in the Irvine area. Working in Irvine is great! Plenty of restaurants, malls, shopping, night life. Your commute time would depend on where you live in relation to where you work. Sondy had some good info in her post. Housing and rentals are PRICEY. Gas/fuel PRICEY. Hopefully your potential new employer will be paying you accorgingly to afford your living and lifestyle. So many things here to do! But lots of driving to do all the fun things. All add up to $$. But OC is a great place, very scenic, beaches are nice. Plenty of recreation all over OC and inland. Plenty of mx tracks to ride, but again if you live in OC you have to drive 1 hour plus to the tracks. Most tracks are worth the drive. CA has a TON to offer, too bad the state Gov't sucks. But we all deal with it because it's such a great place with tons of fun all-around.

Irvine is great. I grew up in Tustin/Orange which is next door. Irvine was considered the safest city in the U.S. I believe a few years ago. The town is known for having a ton of Asians, not really a bad thing. Some nice sized shops such as mission motorsports, and there is also cycle city. Irvine spectrum offers entertainment, and your only about 15 mins from Angel Stadium as well.

Some areas around there to consider would be Ladera Ranch (newer area), Tustin, Tustin Ranch (more pricey) Mission Viejo area, and Lake forest are all real nice and within 10 mins of Irvine.

I was born in Orange, work in Huntington Beach and have lived in Irvine the last 7 years. The are not really any bad areas of Irvine at all. Housing however is not cheap. We recently moved from a 970 sq ft Irvine Company apartment that was more than most peoples mortgages. Shopping is good and night life in the surrounding cities is better than good. Some of the other surrounding cities may be less expensive but just as good of an option if your work will be in Irvine. Traffic sucks. 6 lane wide freeways that don't move. All of the major tracks that you see videos of are within an hour to an hour and a half drive.

Something unique about So. Cal. is that we don't tell people how far something is in miles, we tell them how long it should take in time.

Irvine's great, but it's not an inexpensive place to live.

Irvine is really nice....but like everyone has said...its very pricey....so if I were you i would really look into the cost of living here vs. your expected income...or consider a longer commute then 15 minutes....hell, during peak traffic hours, 15 minutes wont even get you from one side of irvine to the other side....

my suggestion...if riding is really your passion...move to lake elsinore, housing is WAY cheaper, you will be closer to tracks, and natural riding terrian...and your commute will be about 40min over ortega highway.....add a streetbike to your garage and that commute can turn into a little bit of fun....

There are no small towns in SoCal. I'm in San Clemente, the last town on the south end of Orange County, and there are 70,000 other beautiful people here.

There's a lot of industry here, and Orange County invented the action sports industry. So a single person can make a pretty good life for themselves.
But if you have a family- housing, transportation and health insurance are very expensive. $100k a year job doesn't buy a house here for a family.

South of Irvine on the Freeways is pretty good...going North...not so much.

There are all sorts of Housing options around there.

Get out there and check it out...truly...one of CA's better Metro-Areas.

The 1st rule of San Clemente is that you don't talk about San Clememente.

I'm tellin' PAB that you "Blew-It!"

(Btw, where were you, yesterday, when the rest of us were watchin' Kelly win his 11th at the ASP?)

Irvine is very nice. Expensive, but very nice. It is Orange County, so you can find just about anything you would want to do here. Closest track would probably be Milestone Mx in Riverside. Traffic here definitely sucks like others have mentioned. Lived in OC all my life and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else except for San Diego.

I don't get the pricey part, have you seen the prices in San Fran ? Santa Monica ? Manhattan Beach ? yeah pricey to say Lincoln Nebraska, but for So Cal it seems normal priced to me, yeah if you want to live on the ocean, sure way expensive, but $1500 for a 2 bedroom in MV or Laguna Niguel isn't pricey.

We were taking a "Few days on the Beach" attitude for a few minutes...while we could...then PAB and Evan got in the truck and jammed home...for Vegas and then the "Month of Baja"...

I'll be a Chase/Home-n-Back "Driver" for Heide 'til my shoulder is "released" to go back out there...

I was in CA for about a month when I did a mechanic job for a privateer. We stayed in a RV park right down the road from the Star West track. I did not care too much for that area, so I was mostly wondering if all the other SoCal areas are like that?

We did make it to Huntington Beach and I really liked the atmosphere and areas around there. We also made it to some areas including Corona, Chino, LA, Anaheim, and some norhern CA around Hangtown. and those areas were alright. I felt like Corona was a decent areas.

Kind of hard explain my thoughts and concerns so i will be planning a trip to do some looking around again.

The thing I hated most about SoCal was that everything seemed so brown, dead, and lifeless. Here in Illinois it's green and color for as far as you can see. When left Hangtown and drove down to Texas for Freestone the first thing I did outside the RV was lay in the grass and admire the fields!

That's a small culture shock for me. My mortgage payment for my 1200 sq. ft. 2 bedroom home is $307 per month on a $60,000 loan. And I would say that is about average for the area i live in. I don't understand how people can afford $1500 dollars a month for a house payment and I even have good paying job.

um We're desert over here MXT, we don't get a whole lot of rain or humidity ! But hey it's 75 in December or January !! And if you're in the South OC area, it's not like the IE (Riverside, San Bernardino). The further you get away from the ocean the cheaper it get's.

All I can say is this isn't Illinois ...we got houses for $60k but I doubt you'd want to live there.

$60000 mortgage?

You'll pay that much for a 20x20 storage shed out there......

I meant for the area is all I'm saying, when I lived in Canyon Lake it was $1000 for a 3 bed room house, so $1500 for the ocean was ok to me...for the area !

yeah...$1500 isnt super expensive for near the ocean...if you are ok with a 2 bed condo/apt.....me personally, ill take my $1500 4 bed, 3car garage, swimming pool, a block from the lake, Canyon Lake home....even with the commute to OC everyday....

ohhh and back to the OP....if $1500 is a culture shock to you....then you might want to stay outta socal....just sayin....

Just for a point of reference 3 years ago we were paying $1860 for our 970 sqft apartment with the only upside being I could throw eggs at the Vital MX truck at least every other day. We're currently paying a good bit less for a good bit more.

My advice is to not move here based on what info you have supplied. You spent a month in CA and didn't like that is was brown and dead. It is brown and most of the time and you will miss the changing of the seasons, no rain, no thunder, doesn't get cold and on and on. I am not a native of SoCal so I have a different perspective. Loved it at first(I was in my twenties) but would leave in a heartbeat but my wife is a SoCal native and doesn't know what she is missing. Good luck!!
