Well, except for the springs. Have the other OEM's ran aluminum upper and lower legs before? How much weight could be saved there while maintaining strength necessary for mx/sx?

Switching from the steel lowers to aluminum I would guess around 3lbs.I had a set of the all aluminum sxs ones to work on once and they were very very light.

Let me start this by saying I do not hate KTM. The forks are really trick. Unlike anything I have seen. Will the works WP suspension be up to par with the works Showa and KYB?

Engineering wise or ridability wise?

That's the thing. Yes it does work for AC and the GP racing. Not saying one rider is better than the other. Just saying RD and what he is used to with the works Showa in SX.

Works tubes with Showa guts and WP stickers on the outside would not surprise me in this case.

cuz you have a very small idea of what goes on in mx industry..........
ktm owns wp suspension and they are bilt in the same factory facilities as the ktm bikes......

you guys can keep hating on the euro brand as much as you want, just give then the credit of being able to bild their own "crap" and leave your beloved japs apart............
i'm not a ktm client, but if anything i respect their commitment to do it their own way.......can't you do the same??, even if you hate it and just want japs production....!!!!!!

That was not because I hate KTM. They want desperatley to win in the US and will do what it takes to make Dungey (who has been on Showa his entire pro career) happy. Same as JGR has done by building their own works forks with Showa/KYB hybrid parts.

Every comment posted here is not an "I hate Europe/GP's/KTM" sentiment but you always react like it is.

I hear the Marzocci "Shiver" is all-aluminun, too?

comparing what works on a GP track vs what works on a SX track is, for lack of a better term, no comparison. There is more to it than just the fork moving. There is how the chassis reacts when using the fork. What flexes where, what the bikes chassis attitude is like under the stadium lights, in bowl turns, in 3 foot hard whoops.

Close up pics?

I'd like to see if lug and tube are machined as one.

Yep, looks like the 53mm shiver has aluminum legs. 50mm just says DLC coated. The 53mm shows options of magnesium caps and dropouts along with titanium springs. Trickness. Seems like I recall the 35mm Shivers on my kids RM65 may have had aluminum lowers. Those were some light forks.

Ø 53 mm Stanchion tube
Aluminum stanchion tube
Sealed cartridge
Rebound an compression
external adjuster
Spring preload internal adjuster
Weight: 7,8 kg
(with steel spring)

Optional:
Magnesium caps and dropouts
Titanium springs
Intended use: Cross/Supercross, Supermoto

Talked to one of the mechanics at KTM a few years ago and they had gotten some parts from Austria they didn't even know exsisted. I don't think that is the case anymore as Austria is now more involved in the US race effort. Those forks have been around for awhile as has the "drop out" shock. They have some pretty trick stuff at the factory and the best part is the US production MX bikes get better every year. The best part of Dungey and RD at KTM for the consumer will be better production bikes. I have a feeling things have really changed at the race dept and whatever needs to happen for the US effort will. Does that mean copying some Showa or KYB stuff? Maybe, the Japanese have copied some KTM stuff in the past so its not like it does not happen. I think the seals on the new production bikes are from the same suppiler as KYB. KTM is a different animal than they were even a few years ago..and they are light years ahead of where they were a decade ago. But thats what happens when a company gets into racing at the higest level. You learn and grow and things improve. It happened for the big 4 and now its happening at KTM. Like it or not KTM is on its way to becoming a fixture in US motocross.

No, because there is much more suspension knowledge on how to make Showa work for a top level supercross rider. My comment had nothing to do with aluminum uppers/lowers or country of origin for the engineers.

KTM / WP have never had a top flight 450 SX rider on their stuff. It does not mean that they can not do it but just my bench racing theory that if the testing results do not come fast enough that they could set up some one-off hybrid stuff so the rider stays happy.

Maybe they better get Bubba's old suspension guy and graft a Yamaha front end onto the KTM.

Most MXers have a serious case of yellow fever don't they?
