when are people going to figure out that these little instances of useless body english (scrubs) are actually counter-intuitive, and only popular because the person who does them happens to be fast? what if kyle chisolm was the only guy "scrubbing"? would it be as popular?

the rossi leg wave in moto gp. would it be as popular is randy de puniet was the one who started leg waving?

ponder.

Does this seem counter intuitive?

Scrubbing when done correctly is VERY effective. I can think of a half dozen examples off the top of my head where Stewart scrubbed past guys to take the lead. Earlier in the SX season Canard used that same tactic to get back past Reed on the final lap of a main to win. It's the bitter old man in you thinking that it's just all for flash.

One big thing I take away from watching these old videos is how soft even the best bikes were. Everyone is wallowing and plunging down into the stroke, suspension just wasn't that good.

Yeah without tainting this amazing video of an amazing milestone in MX history with scrubbing arguments too much, scrubbing is a lot of wasted energy, and just makes the kids in the C class look even more like they're having a seizure. Nothing cracks me up more than seeing some 15 year old scrawny kid at the track who's obviously going pro (sarcasm) come up to some table top and move his butt, shoulders, elbows and head in 4 different directions to get it "real low"

I can come up with about 10 more videos like that if you like. Carrying more speed into a jump doesn't do you any good unless you can do something with it. Without the scrub Canard just flat lands 10 feet past the down ramp and doesn't pass anything.

I've also noticed how soft the suspension is in these old videos. It's amazing how fast these guys went on bikes that were bottoming out on everything.

Skip to 6:45. Slow motion of the last lap repass at Jacksonville. Canard was almost 2 bike-lengths back going into the face. Again I'm not saying it's overused and in some cases pointless, but there's a reason and place for the scrub and it's not just flash.
