A story in today's news from an Ireland Medical Examiner's report of a 76 year old man's death prompts this musing, a day late though it is for this type of thread.

I've stared at people and tried to make it happen, but it never did. I'll give it a 1/100

Well, if you made it happen, that wouldn't be spontaneous now, would it? That would be a firestarter. Seems there was a movie about that.

I never believed it until I saw photographic evidence. Now I'm at 100.

It does happen. There was an article on Yahoo last week from a guy in Europe that died from it. Doctors confirmed it but they still don't have an explanation for why it happens.

Galway man dies by spontaneous combustion
September 23, 2011

An Irish coroner has ruled that a man who burned to death in his home, died as a result of spontaneous combustion.

The case is believed to be the first of its kind in Ireland.

76-year-old Michael Faherty died at his home at Clareview Park, Galway on 22 December 2010.

An inquest in Galway on Thursday heard how investigators had been baffled as to the cause of death, with coroner Dr Ciaran McLoughlin saying it was the first time in 25 years of investigating deaths that he had returned such a verdict.

Forensic experts found a fire in the fireplace of the sitting room where Mr Faherty’s badly burnt body had been found.

However they ruled that it was not the cause of the blaze that killed the Galway man.

The court was also told that no trace of an accelerant had been found at the scene, and nothing to suggest foul play.

The court heard Mr Faherty had been found lying on his back with his head closest to the fireplace.

The fire had been confined to the sitting room, with the only damage being to Mr Faherty’s body, the ceiling above him, and the floor underneath him.

Dr McLoughlin said he had consulted medical textbooks and carried out research in an attempt to find an explanation for the death.

He said Professor Bernard Knight, in his book on forensic pathology, had written about spontaneous combustion and noted that such reported cases were almost always near an open fireplace or chimney.

He said: “This fire was thoroughly investigated and I’m left with the conclusion that this fits into the category of spontaneous human combustion, for which there is no adequate explanation.”

I was trying to find the photo where Clooney is driving and tries to show the other guy what "the stare" looks like...that cracked me up. Yeah, I dug that movie.

I am at 0 on this one too. It's obvious that there are cases where bodies have smoldered into nothing but ash but I believe in all cases there was some form of ignition. For example, someone dies in their easy boy from a heart attack while smoking which causes the chair to start smoldering and continues until the chair, and the body in it has been consumed.
