#515 Michael Sottile Marlborough, MA, US Honda CRF450R 1:55.581

Looks like a Southwick local in the B group blazed the fastest lap in qualifying on lap 2 of the first session. Will he get mentioned on the telecast?

It would be cool to see him use the first gate pick to pull a huge holeshot.

Very strange, indeed....I guess we'll see if they give him the top spot. If so, this has got to be a first that some no name guy goes a second faster than the factory guys.

Southwick is weird when it comes to qualifying. The first session is smooth. Last year Andrew Short's bike problems kept him from getting a lap time in the first session. By the time he hit the track for the second session the track was rough enough that he could not turn a lap to put him into the top 40 times and he DNQ. He did race as the 41st gate pick because he was in the top 10 in points.

Never underestimate a local privateer at Southwick. Not saying he can ride the full moto at the speed of the factory guys, but the track has produced Ellis, Keller, Dowd, and Henry.

It looks like they did give him the top qualifying position...meanwhile, Ricky Dietrich was 2 seconds slower than the the fastest woman. Crazy!

This goes to show you that timed quailifing is not always a 100% correct way of getting riders into a race.

Tracks change as you can see today.

locals dominate...crazy a 2:024 didnt qualify for the 450's , bummer for peick , spangler , peters didnt make it in. goes to show you how the track losses speed quickly. ama does throw the seated riders out first sometimes but this weekend the locals got a gift ,lots of new names in the top 20 qualifying

This just proves how fucked up timed qualifying is. They need to go back to practice sessions and run qualifying heats like they used to do.

I was just thinking that, but really, similar things could have happened with qualifying races as well.

Usually this timed qualifying works pretty well, but it's really jacked up today.

When group B first went out it was like a freeway. Then Group A went out and it had rained, so their times were slower, look at group B's second practice times compared tom Group As second practice times and you will see how fast they really were/weren't.

Sottile's session 1 time is #1 overall. His session 2 time would have him DNQ for the day. Very strange indeed.

so just because a race is run in a diferent terrain then most other races, and some new names show up, qualifying is now a issue........
it has to be always the same names on top or there is something wrong......but then there is even hope on a dowd great result ...
i guess its not the qualifying that has a problem, i guess there is a lot more to the sport of motocross then some people here are used to........

Timed qualifying has always been a issue. The first group goes out on a smooth track and can lay down times that are not really what they can run when the track gets worked in. Lets see if this Sottile guy can even score one point today. He should be able to since he was fastest in timed qualifying.

It's all about fairness, buddy. Clearly, the system wasn't fair today.

Why cant they do an average of both sessions that way when the track does slow down everyones times will show that. So if you have top 5 speed in the first session but are 30th in the second session you wont be counted as the 5th fastest. Not sure if that would work too well but thats better then being a one lap hero and making it in to the program.

I know, why don't we just wait for it to RAIN before both the A and B practice sessions to make it FAIR!?(sarcasm)

I know what you're saying, but think of it on the other extreme.

Say the race was at a track like Mt. Morris or Steel City. The first B session is great, then an all out downpour before the 450 A session and nobody makes it from the A session.

After today, it's looking very possible.

Swings and round abouts, if you have bike trouble, get taking out or crash out yourself then I'm sure the rider would prefered timed qualifying !

Its hard to please everyone.

Plus if its a race or timed qualifying I'm sure the locals such as Michael Sottile would make it.

Go Freddy Norén !
