Let's say that Rider X rides MX1 and wins his class at the MXdN this year. Then next year Rider X finishes the 450 Nationals in 4th place. Should Rider X be Team USA's MX1 rider because he's the "defending MX1 champ?"

MX1 should be whoever the 450 champ (or top American) is. MX3 should be the runner-up.

And it doesn't matter to me whether it is Villopoto or Dungey since I am a huge fan of both: Whoever wins this 450 outdoor championship should be MX1, runner-up should be MX3.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. If he's the defending champ, he should be given the opportunity to defend his win.

What if Dungey crashed out of the '10 MX championship and Shorty won? Coming into MX '11, clearly Shorty would not be the favorite to win as we've got a handful of riders that are better than him and beat him in the '10 SX. So, should we take away his number one plate since he's not the fastest out there, or do we let him run it to try and defend it? There's a simple answer to that question.

It's not about who's the best or the fastest, it's about who the defending champ is. Dungey is the defending champ, is he not?

Of course they give overalls. But its not like they crowned RD champion. Team USA won the championship and RD led the way.

This does not mean HE, RYAN DUNGEY won the Championship and is the MXDN winner- team USA won, team USA is to defend their title and the #1, #2, and #3.

What if he won the overall but the other members last year both DNFd and they didn't win the championship. Would RD still get to run number 1 this year even though HE won every time he was on the line? NO! He would have to run one of the three numbers according to the position his team finished last year. (if they finished second he would have to run 4, 5, or 6 depending on which class he rode, if the team finished third, he would have to run 7, 8, or 9 depending on which class he rode).

you simply cannot accept that you are wrong. You know everything. Probably a learning disability or something. i know its not your fault but shit man. i hope i was able to explain that to you in a good enough way for you to understand. If you have any other questions just PM me. Ill be glad to help.

If Dungey wins the MX nationals- he should wear the 1 no matter what anyone says. Yes.

Side note we all know our boys will Kill anyone else out there.
You lost me at "He wont he overall."

I understand what you're saying - and if Dungey won the OA but America placed second, guess who would get to wear the lowest number on the team?

This is all in my opinion. You're very entitled to your own, and I fully understand people thinking RV should be MX1. Maybe the best way to resolve it is to give the 2011 champ the #1 plate, but at this point I would have given the nod to the defending MX1 class winner, much like DeCoster did.

Grieby, Team USA won the MXdN last year, not Ryan Dungey.

So RV should have wore the #1 plate in 2008 because he won the individual overall in 2007, NO!

The best American rider of the current year should represent team USA as #1. This is not an individual event.Sideways

Go look up the event results. Back in '06 Stefan Everts won the OA at MXdN even though he wasn't on the winning team. So yes, Ryan Dungey did win the OA last year.

RV couldn't run it in 08 because he didn't have the option to. Dungey, however, does have the option to.

Quick, someone call Micky Dyomnd and have him explain how he won the 125 national championship two years in a row and never was picked to ride for team USA.

If the way Bailey and RJ felt about each other in 86 is any measure, then the rest of the world is in for it.

Last time I checked, Stefan Everts was retired in 2007 and the MXdN MX1 overall was won by a Mr. R. Carmichael.

You caught me. I accidentally fat fingered the 7 instead of 6. Nicely done.

The numbers 1,2,3 are for the TEAM that won last year. If the TEAM that won the previous year sends 3 different riders the following year, the rider in MX1 wears the #1, MX2 the #2, and MX3 the #3.

Dungey isn't "defending" anything. Both he and RV should be honored just to be chosen and run whatever class the TEAM requires.

They should of based the decision on-

Who has the most championships-

Who has lead the team to the most victories-

Who's in the points lead-

Or

just flipped a coin-

I didn't read the replies but I guess it was because of more Dungey whining similar to round 2 of the Pro National series.

I don't think it matters, and if Villopoto is mad about being MX3 then he himself has issues. It's a team event. Man I wish these guys would realize that. If they're 1-2 in the race, then one better not be trying to pass the other if they have a big lead on 3rd.

If it were up to me, I would pick Dungey for MX1. Look how consistent he is. He'll ALWAYS be up front unless he has a mechanical. Villopoto can flat out fly and beat everyone, but will also have a few races where he crashes a time or two and is just inside the top 10. If memory serves me correct, the only time Dungey was off the podium this year was moto 2 at Freestone. I think we can all agree that wasn't his fault. You want your MX1 guy to give you TWO solid top 3 motos. The other two riders can have one throw away between the two of them. The safe bet is on Dungey to race against the best the other countries have to offer both times he is on the track.

Villo wasn't mad. He just figured he would be the MX1 rider given the AMA points right now. It doesn't really matter who rides what. We thought that after round 1 when Chad and Dungey were tied in points. It was an honest and un-candid Chad Reed who said he had no clue there was an issue but the Suzuki camp brought it up to the AMA.

It would take a blind fool to think that Decoster and his Dungey courting are not responsible for this whole MX1/ MX3 debacle.

...so if Dungey goes 1-1 next week and RV goes 2-3 or 3-2 will this whole thing change?? I mean Dungey would be in the lead again for points...come on seriously, this post couldnt wait a while longer? There are three more rounds, after Southwick we will have a better idea, because Dungey will either be in the lead, closer in points to RV, or further in points from RV. Can we put this topic to bed until next Saturday night, when we have a somewhat better idea (and even then it will likely be still too early).

Probably not. What if RV goes 1-1? Are the Dungey swingers going to still say he deserves to be MX1? The MX1 and MX3 thing is a moot point referring to who got chose to ride what. The point is that someone made a big deal about not wearing the #1 plate just like they did not wearing the red plate earlier this year which is childish. It is not a "professional" thing to even worry about.

You referring to Dungey complaining?? I have not heard of him complaining about the red plate...Reed brought it up. I have not heard him complain about possibly being MX3...RV made comments. So where are you going with this?? If Dungey is upset about possibly being MX3 then he needs to go out and beat the piss outta that little red head. As far as the red plate goes, they both should have had a red plate according to the rules, and I like the way it was honestly, lets new people know they were TIED in points.

Now as far as if RV goes 1-1..did you read my post? I said why cant we wait until after Southwick to comment on this again for 3 reasons...read them. Now, the fact is it shouldnt be brought up until after Pala or until we know who is going to be champ. It should have been stated RV and RD will ride MX1 and MX3, with the champion being MX1 and the runner-up being MX3. That simple, let them fight over #1 in the championship and the des Nations.
8/22/2011 9:52pm
I'd love to see a team take-out at the Des Nations near the end of the moto...just over this number bs.
