Hey Paul, Ive been reading this thread for some time, thanks for all the input. I am using a Rebel XTi with just the standard 15-55 lens. Can you give me any tips on some of my photos:

gdub, I like them. I like those shots from above and I try to get those when ever there's something suitable to stand on. But what I usually do it to tilt the camera a bit so that the rider is going from one corner of the frame to the other instead of side to side. The diagonal composition makes the picture more dynamic.

When i shoot jumps I try to leave more space under the rider than above him, gives an illusion of more air.

613, like what? Sell your camera and go take the Postal exam? Those are good shots, could they be better? Maybe a little, but maybe not. Watch your backgrounds and charge a lot so when you're old and ready to retire and your kids are ready to start college you won't have to choose between eating or educating them.

Seriously, you have a good eye. take some photo and art classes but take some business courses too, you might hate me while you're taking them but you'll thank me later.

thanks paul.... i was going to college for photography but that only lasted about 2 weeks. Just not really the right time in my life right now, maybe this winter ill take your advice and take some more classes since i'll be sitting around with a dang injury again. Thanks again!!!

hey paul i dont really have much indoor shooting experience at all. help me out need the the tips.

I think you're lucky you didn't get run over. I'm kidding but be careful shooting stuff like that, remember objects in fisheyes are closer than they appear.

I like the lighting and the sky exposure you did a good job balancing those and there's a nice chunk of negative space on the left for headlines and type. Would I change anything? Maybe a little light on his left leg to give a little separation from the background, not too much just a little on the edge.

It's a nice shot.

Hey Paul,

I finely picked up a camera so let the lessons begin. I know I need to work on backgrounds, Comp. and Lighting but I am hoping to get a little direction from the master.

I know you shot Canon but I just Picked up a Nikon D300 with just the cheap kit lens (18-55)

so please any advise would be great.

Awesome, thanks! I started taking pictures at local races a few years ago, have spent a lot of time on the internet and reading books trying to learn how to take the best picture in all sorts of conditions. I still can't seem to get it just right. I plan on reading through this entire thread and get some pointers, and will also keep up with your website. Thanks so much!

Yes, a simple one. Get off the action program mode and try Av, Tv, and manual modes... doesn't cost anything but time!

Don't know what lens you are using, but IMHO, shooting moto with a Canon 70-200 F2.8L is one of the best moves anyone can make. Expensive, a bit, but well worth it.

Jorgen try using a focus point off to one side to make the composition a bit more interesting, watch the backgrounds, try to keep all the clutter behind the riders to a minimum. Walk around a spot to find the best lighting for that time of day, a spot that stinks at noon will rock at 4:00PM but there's always a place that has the best lighting for any given time of day, you just have to find it. Look like you're off to a good start. Keep shooting and look at your file info to see what camera settings you used for the shots you like best.

bmoto, they're ok, nice from a technical aspect but try to find some more exciting angles. I know it's tough from behind the fences, just keep moving around.

doublezero, there's not much negative to say about that shot, it's a nice whip. the color is good and this version looks sharp enough. The roof in the background is a little distracting but I don't mind the branches.

Nick I like those photos esp the last one, you really nailed the exposure in a tricky situation.

What lens should you get next? Well that 17-70 is a little on the short side (but you're making it work for you) so the next one I'd get would be some kind of 300 and which one just depends on your budget.

Okay so I have been trying to use the manual modes on the camera and been trying to get some better pictures, any things i should keep working on? Still using a Canon EOS 400D with a 70-200mm lense. Here some pictures I took the other day:
